Flick City Episode 17: Interviews With Jamie Kennedy And ‘Shirley’ Screenwriter Sarah Gubbins

0
I went slightly personal with this mini-pod as I am focused on writing my first ever screenplay (at the tender old age of 48!). If you’re interesting in screenwriting or a writer in general, check out my interview with Shirley screenwriter Sarah Gubbins. Also included is some audio from my interview with Jamie Kennedy as he talks about just turning 50.

Trailer: Brenton Thwaites Is Haunted By The ‘Ghosts Of War’

I gave the proverbial thumbs up to the last two Vertical Entertainment films I checked out (Inheritance and Capone) and Ghosts of War has the makings of an effective thriller. Combining the brutality of World War II and horror is an intriguing mix, the trailer has peaked my interest.

‘Extra Ordinary’ Review: Maeve Higgins Toplines Charming Debut Film From Mike Ahern And Enda Loughman

0
Extra Ordinary, directed by Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, stands as a charming debut feature film. Set in small-town Ireland, Extra Ordinary centers on Rose (Maeve Higgins) as she is trying to forget her paranormal past. She spent her childhood helping her father on an, apparently popular, paranormal television series. In the process of filming that series, Rose’s father met an untimely end, leaving Rose scared to face that side of her life, opting instead for a humdrum existence as a driving instructor. Maeve Higgins brings a wonderful mix of pathos and wit to her role, grounded in the sense that she has lived for years of loneliness.

‘Aviva’ Q&A With Director Boaz Yakin

Or Schraiber and Bobbi Jene Smith in "Aviva" (Outsider Pictures)
Director Boaz Yakin’s 1994 feature Fresh still resonates today, and throughout the years Yakin has carved his own path with helming higher profile pictures (Remember the Titans, Max, the Jason Statham headlined Safe) and indie driven projects (Death in Love, Boarding School). Yakin’s lifelong passion for subverting genres as well as pushing himself as an artist has led to Aviva, a new feature that marks his finest moment in cinema. During our extensive conversation, Yakin talked about the creative process behind making his ambitious film.

‘Da 5 Bloods’ Review: Delroy Lindo’s Powerhouse Performance Drives Sublime Spike Lee Film

DA 5 BLOODS (L to R) ISIAH WHITLOCK JR. as MELVIN, NORM LEWIS as EDDIE, DELROY LINDO as PAUL, CLARKE PETERS as OTIS and JONATHAN MAJORS as DAVID in DA 5 BLOODS Cr. COURTESY OF NETFLIX © 2020
Da 5 Bloods is a movie about so many things but first and foremost it’s must see cinema. If you’re a lifelong fan of director Spike Lee’s work this is preaching to the choir, but if you’re in the mood for an uncompromising, ennervating and at times brutal yard, take a good look and see “what’s going on.”

Is it time to change the logo, maybe even the name of the production company? Am I a sellout for even having these concerns? I’d love to hear from you about it. anderson@andersoncowan.com

0

On the latest episode of Flick City I interview Aviva director Boaz Yakin (Fresh, Remember The Titans) and Shirley actress Odessa Young (she’s best known for the 2018 feature Assassination Nation). Yakin talked about his inventive, personal and creative approach in making Aviva. Young elaborates on working with co-star Elisabeth Moss and talks about why she loves the Baz Luhrmann flick Moulin Rouge.

Aviva hits Virtual Theaters starting June 12 and Shirley is available everywhere (I love both films!). Thanks again for supporting Anderson and I on CinemAddicts and please rate and review our podcast!!
