The phrase “skin in the game” is oft-used phrased for how much one has invested in some kind of project or lifestyle. It’s a term that definitely fits semi-retired professional wrestler Ian Hodgkinson, the subject of Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro. The trailer has me hooked, and it will be interesting to see how Hodgkinson deals with his share of challenges.

Along with his years of fighting as Lucha Libre legend Vampiro, Ian Hodgkinson has also served as the Director of Talent for Lucha Libre AAA in Mexico City and Lucha Underground in Los Angeles.

One can see from the trailer that wrestling is Hodgkinson’s life, even if the job has taken a physical and emotional toll on his well being. Most importantly, he’s also a single parent rasing his teenage daughter Dasha in Northern Canada! Director Michael Paszt will hopefully capture Hodgkinson’s passion for the sport as well as spotlight the trials of juggling a demanding career and home life.

“Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro is an incredibly inspiration true story that shows no matter how many times life tries to beat you down and break you apart, you need to rise up and conquer your demons in order to survive,” said Epic Pictures CEO Patrick Ewald. “And now, as we are faced with incredible challenges all around us, I can’t think of a more relevant film to remind us of the resiliency and power of the human spirit.”

As a fan of WCW Monday Nitro, I appreciated what Vampiro brought to the table every single match (he could dish out and take the pain from my recollection). I’m very interested to know more about his life (and how he managed to push forth even with 24 concussions), so this feature is definitely on my watch list.

The documentary, which premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2019, hits limited theaters on Friday, September 4. For other folks who want to stay home and sociallty distance, Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro hits VOD and Digital platforms on September 8.
