Review: ‘Becky’ Is “Lean, Mean” And “Gory” Fun

Becky, directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, is going to garner either lots of praise or derision, based on the viewer’s expectations. If you go into Becky thinking you are getting a heady, slow-burn, A24-style art-house horror flick, you will most-likely be disappointed. Becky is lean, mean, gory fun.

Review: Hidden Gem ‘Miracle Mile’ Deserves Cult Status

0
Miracle Mile,, directed by Steve De Jarnatt, deserves the same sort of cult status as movies like Heathers, Red Dawn, and They Live. Miracle Mile tells the story of 30 year-old nerd, Harry (Anthony Edwards) who finally meets the love of his life, Julie (Mare Winningham), during a chance encounter at the La Brea Tar Pits museum. Julie and Harry have a whirlwind, day-long date, but alas, Julie has to go to work at a nearby diner. They agree to meet at the diner when she gets done with her shift, at midnight. Unfortunately, Harry’s alarm doesn’t work, so he doesn’t arrive until 4am.

#52 I’ve Got a Movie to Make: One Full Year (Week 52 of 116)

0
Well it’s week 52 which means we’ve been doing this every week for a year now. Was going to do a retrospect, but talking about myself and my future doesn’t feel right this week. Will take some inventory next week… if there is a next week. I kid.

Listen: Alain Johannes Is “Free” To Wander With Contemplative Track

0
Alain Johannes’ third solo album Hum comes out July 31, and one reason why I’ll be checking out this effort lies in his latest single “Free.” Johannes’ nature driven video, featuring landscapes of places my hermit self will never traverse, is definitely eye catching. Plus, the song makes one question the nature of one’s own sense of freedom.

Flick City Episode 15: Amy Goldstein On Directing ‘Kate Nash: Underestimate The Girl’

Kate Nash: Underestimate The Girl (CR: Carolina Faruolo)

This episode features my interview with Amy Goldstein, the director behind Kate Nash: Underestimate The Girl. I also talk about my love for that documentary, which is currently available via Alamo On Demand. My movie picks this week are the aforementioned film as well as the Penelope Spheeris flick Suburbia.

Bruce Purkey Finds Dazzling Trash With ‘Blood Machines’

0
On paper, there is no reason I should enjoy Blood Machines, a Shudder Original Series, directed by Seth Ickerman. It has a thin plot revolving around some naked-lady-ghost ai escaping from “blade runner” types, only passable acting, and relies heavily on digital effects. But, despite all of those shortcomings, there is a level of energetic creativity that just swept me up in its dazzlingly trashy spell.

Love Guitarist Johnny Echols Takes A Trip Back To ‘Laurel Canyon’

0
The two-part docuseries Laurel Canyon focuses on the artists who lived in hillside area of Los Angeles back in the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, and Love guitarist Johnny Echols reflected on being a part of that era. Video of my interview, as well as a transcript of the Q&A is featured in the post.

‘The Vast of Night’ Is A Cinematic Gem Of The Highest Order

0
The Vast of Night marks an auspicious debut for first-time director Andrew Patterson as he is joining Ari Aster, Robert Eggers, and Jordan Peele in a new pantheon of genre directors. Patterson infuses The Vast of Night with a combination of bravura style and subtle touches that is unusual to find in most directors, and mostly unheard-of for a first feature film.

Jake Horowitz Holds A “Long Take” View of ‘The Vast of Night’

If you’re in need of a sci-fi thriller with a ton of cinematic flourishes and excellent performances (from leads Jake Horowitz and Sierra McCormick), check out The Vast of Night on Amazon Prime Video. My internet connection was a bit mangled during my chat with Horowitz, so there may be a few seconds here and there left out. Still, there is enough insight from Horowitz in this chat (he talks about his work with McCormick and director Andrew Patterson and his love for Y Tu Mamá También) to make it worth your while!
