If you are a diehard fan of Aaron Sorkin’s expansive work as a writer and filmmaker, then The Trial of the Chicago 7 will be right up your alley. That said, the film stands out its own thanks to the immersive look at how these protestors, which included Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen), Jerry Rubin (Jeremy Strong), Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne), and Bobby Seale (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), persevered in their own manner throughout the trial.

The Grade A ensemble also includes John Carroll Lynch (David Dellinger), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Richard Schultz), and Mark Rylance (William Kunstler). Expect this movie, which currently has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, to nab a healthy share of honors come Awards season.

Eric Holmes is a huge fan of Sorkin so The Trial of the Chicago 7 was definitely for him (he has since watched the flick numerous times) and Bruce Purkey spent considerable time watching and reading material on the event after watching this movie. A huge part of the movie’s effectiveness also lies in its value added nature; I am definitely reading more about this case and the lives of those involved thanks to The Trial of the Chicago 7.
