Jake Gyllenhaal reteams with Southpaw filmmaker Antoine Fuqua in The Guilty. With a screenplay from Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective) and voice acting from Ethan Hawke and Riley Keough, this Netflix feature should hit on all cylinders. I discuss The Guilty, a remake of the critically acclaimed feature of the same name, on the Find Your Film podcast.

Jake Gyllenhaal is Joe Baylor, a police officer who is now working as an operator at a 911 dispatch call center. Along with his share of family issues, Joe’s future in the LAPD might be in danger.

Amidst all this stress comes a call from Zola (Riley Keough), a woman who claims she has been abducted. Throughout 89 minutes, we are witnessed to Joe’s determination to save this woman’s life and secure her daughter’s safety by any means necessary.

Gyllenhaal, who was raised in Los Angeles, turns in another excellent and memorable City of Angels role (The Guilty, Nightcrawler and End of Watch is his L.A. trilogy). Since the feature is set within one location, it’s up to Fuqua and Gyllenhaal to keep viewers locked in to the tense and exacting story until its final moments.

Their collaboration is a successful one, and The Guilty stands on its own as a singular and entertaining experience. That said, I highly recommend the original film to watch after viewing The Guilty. It’s a sentiment shared by Find Your Film co-host Eric Holmes, who is a fan of Fuqua’s body of work.

Although co-host Bruce Purkey also recommends The Guilty, he found the remake to be a bit unnecessary. During the episode, he makes a Fruit Loops versus fruit rings analogy which I found amusing. Personally, I’ll take both the loops and the rings!
