In Monos, Julianne Nicholson stars as Sara Watson, a woman held captive by a group of teen rebel soldiers in the mountains of Colombia. The youths call her “Doctora,” and though nearly broken in spirit, she is determined to survive this ordeal and possibly escape her captors. For my review of Monos, go here.

Nicholson has carved out a solid career in television (Ally McBeal, Boardwalk Empire) and film (August: Osage County, From Nowhere). With Monos she delivers one of her finest performances, and spending weeks living in the jungle with the cast and crew gives Monos a deep level of authenticity.

Speaking of authentic, one of director Sydney Pollack’s (Jeremiah Johnson, Three Days of the Condor) most acclaimed and beloved films is Tootsie. Julianne Nicholson sings its praises:

“My favorite movie is Tootsie. Just because it gives me so much joy. Anyone I talk to about it – they remember dialogue, they remember scenes. They remember where they were when they saw it. For me it’s a poignant one because I remember watching it when I was a teenager and it gave me such a romantic view of New York City where I ultimately moved when I was 18.

“Everyone is so on top of their game and it’s actually contemporary with #MeToo and all that’s happening. It’s sort of a window to equality in the entertainment business and everywhere. (But it had) that funny spin and Dustin Hoffman is incredible in it, and it’s my favorite movie. I can watch it any day.”
