Anderson Cowan and I preview September movies we want to see and recap a couple of flicks we dug (or disliked) from August. Lots of movies to discuss, and I also throw in my two cents on several films from this month that I’ve already seen. Take a listen to the show below!!
Anderson’s August recap has him sharing his thoughts on Logan Lucky, Wind River, and Detroit. Out of all three, his favorite is Wind River (starts at 8:35 – AC thinks it could be up for Best Picture for Pete’s Sake!!).
My picks from last month is Gook (13:00), a black and white flick directed/penned/starring Justin Chon. I wrote a review on Gook a few days back and it’s here. Another movie I dug is the Noomi Rapace flick What Happened To Monday (17:50), which is currently streaming on Netflix . If you love Rapace’s action work from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or Prometheus, What Happened To Monday should be your kind of flick! Here’s a topic for discussion – Anderson gets Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara confused (21:38) – do you as well???? We round off the segment recommending two films: Side Effects (starring Rooney Mara) and The Drop (Noomi Rapace)!!!
As for September, the movies we discuss is It, a project which he describes as “horse garbage” (24:46 – a reference to the It miniseries), One of the films I saw (and gave 3.5 stars to) is Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Very funny film. I didn’t see the original but Anderson did – thus we balanced each other out in this Goon segment (26:18). Anderson Cowan also talks about his love for D2: The Mighty Ducks.
Among Anderson’s September Picks are director Lake Bell’s I Do Until I Don’t (34:20).
Like most of the listeners who responded to the “what movies do you want to see in September” question, I’m all excited for It (39:00) – Anderson however isn’t on board!
One film we’re both excited to see is director Darren Aronofksy’s Mother!. Our discussion of the film, as well as our diametrically opposed takes on The Fountain, starts at 42:35.
I also talk about American Assassin which unfortunately is still on review embargo (48:30), but I did go full review on Rebel in the Rye (a solid and value added biopic on J.D. Salinger). Nicholas Hoult does a great job as Salinger, and the best moments come from Hoult’s interaction with Kevin Spacey (as Professor Whit Burnett). Rebel in the Rye should appeal to movie buffs who dig movies about the craft of writing and, if you don’t know much about Salinger’s life, it’s also a movie that’s worth checking out.
Also discussed on the show are Kingsman: The Golden Circle (57:35), The Tiger Hunter (57:00 ) , The LEGO Ninjago Movie (58:20), and Battle of the Sexes (1:00:55).
One film I’m predicting is gonna be excellent is Lucky, a flick that features Harry Dean Stanton as its lead. Looks pretty fantastic and I’ll be posting a review on the film later this week. We start talking about towards the end of the program (1:01:52).
