Cristin Milioti and Ben Feldman Talk ‘A to Z’ Chemistry

0

Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother) and Ben Feldman (Mad Men) play apparently mismatched couples in the upcoming NBC comedy A to Z. The series premiers October 2 (9:30 pm et/pt), but the pilot can currently be viewed on the show’s official page.

Milioti’s chemistry with Josh Radnor led many How I Met Your Mother fans to wonder why Ted and the mom didn’t live happily ever after. For Feldman, his inevitably heartbreaking and memorable run as Michael Ginsberg was anchored by his creative rapport with co-star Elisabeth Moss.

During the A to Z interviews, I asked Milioti and Feldman if chemistry among actors is simply innate or if it can be worked on through the rehearsal process. Check out the video below for their answer.

Jessica Chastain Loves Fighting For Her Movie Roles

0

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, upon first blush, seems like a straightforward story about the highs and lows of a couple’s (Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy) relationship. First time filmmaker Ned Benson has other more ambitious things on his mind, as his movie is actually separated into three different features.

Most movie fans will see the 122 minute theatrical cut The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them starting September 12. If you’re absolutely entranced by Them, you can also check out the flicks Him and Her when they are both released in select theaters October 10. Both Him and Her (and for that matter Them) have different tones and points of view (Her’s concept originated when Chastain wanted a bit more depth to her character, so Benson wrote a new script which devoted more time to Eleanor’s life).

The project also features wonderful supporting work from Ciarán Hinds as Conor’s celebrity restaurateur father, as well as Isabelle Huppert and William Hurt as Eleanor’s parents. Although each actor have their moments in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, their respective roles should deepen in Him and Her.

Chastain, who’s received Oscar nods for her work in Zero Dark Thirty and The Help, may land her third nomination for The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (especially since Weinstein Films know how to mount a high profile awards campaign).

For Jessica Chastain, a huge element of filmmaking is creating a strong bond with the director (she and Eleanor Rigby director Ned Benson have known each other for years, before her star making turns in Tree of Life and The Help).

Click on the Soundcloud bar below as Chastain explains why fighting for movie roles is a gratifying part of her process (she mentions her previous films The Debt and The Help in the clip).

Honeymoon Director Leigh Janiak Sees The Light With Digital Filmmaking

0

Opening September 12 in select theaters and on VOD, Honeymoon centers on newlyweds (Rose Leslie, Harry Treadaway) who leave the city to spend some quality time at a remote cabin. With hardly anyone in sight, surrounded by trees and a lake, Bea (Leslie) and Paul (Treadaway) should be having the time of their lives.

Unfortunately, a nighttime excursion in which Paul catches Bea sleepwalking leads to dire repercussions, as the woman he loves gradually transforms before his eyes.

Though it was shot in North Carolina and has its share of exterior sequences, Honeymoon is a claustrophobic thriller in the vein of Roman Polanski’s Repulson or The Tenant. The storyline’s main scares come from Bea’s emotional and mental undoing by an unseen force as Paul is rendered helpless in the process.

During the interviews, first time filmmaker Leigh Janiak explained why she initially considered shooting the movie in Super 16 and eventually went digital (with the Arri Alexa). She also talks about how watching Amour and Zero Dark Thirty helped inform her the film’s visual aesthetic (most notably in Honeymoon’s use of lighting).

Director Richard Linklater “Came Running” As TCM Guest Programmer

0

Boyhood filmmaker Richard Linklater has joined Turner Classic Movies (TCM) this month to serve as its guest programmer. His first recommendation, the 1958 feature Some Came Running, airs tonight (TCM, 8 pm et/pt).

Directed by Vincente Minelli, Some Came Running stars Frank Sinatra as a disillusioned World War II vet who comes home, only to find the road turning in the wrong direction. In a 2010 interview with “The Guardian,” Linklater expressed his sincere love for the film, which he describes as a “wonderful drama.” “It’s a Sinatra vehicle but I love it because it’s about an artist who’s flopped,” said Linklater, who also directed Before Midnight and Waking Life. “And that’s hard to depict.” Some Came Running also stars Dean Martin and Shirley Maclaine (she worked with Linklater on the flick Bernie).

After Some Came Running, TCM viewers will then be treated to Linklater’s two other recommendations – The Asphalt Jungle (10:30 pm et) and Fanny and Alexander (12:45 a.m.)

During the Boyhood interviews, I asked Richard Linklater if there will be a director’s cut to his film. His answer (Boyhood co-star Patricia Arquette is also heard in the clip) is below:

Jessica Biel & Natalie Dormer Grace Yahoo! Style’s Digital Mag Launch

0

Yahoo! Style is a new digital magazine that’s obviously part of the Yahoo! family, and to kick things off the mag features interviews with Jessica Biel and Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer.

Actress Jessica Biel, who serves Yahoo Style’s first cover girl, talked about working with her brother Justin Biel and Grason Ratowsky on the Denver based company BARE. Created just last year, BARE sells eco-conscious bags made out of burlap coffee sacks.

Biel supported her brother on his new venture, and also offered creative advice. “I wanted the bags to be big and more elegant-feeling in terms of what kind of leather we were using, what kind of hardware we were using,” said Biel during her Yahoo Style interview. “Given the raw quality of the burlap, I wanted a nice element of luxury there.”

As for the Natalie Dormer interview, she was pretty spot on when discussing what makes her role as political and social opportunist Margaery Tyrell (Game of Thrones) so unique:

It’s kind of refreshing as a woman not to be playing a character that’s just defined by whom she’s in love with, to be honest. With Margaery, political ambition is motivating her—her relationships with all these different men has an agenda.

There’s also a pretty cool “Yahoo!-ed Myself” video with Dormer in which she talks about why she puts as little make-up as possible when she’s not on a job. The “Yahoo!-ed Myself” will be an ongoing series under the Yahoo! Style umbrella.

‘No Good Deed’ Star Idris Elba Sets Sights On Directing

1

In No Good Deed, Idris Elba plays Colin, an escaped convict with a destructive fixation on women. On a stormy night, Colin’s path crosses with a frustrated suburban housewife named Terri (Taraji P. Henson), and what ensues is a deadly battle for survival. Leslie Bibb co-stars as Terri’s best friend, with Henry Simmons (NYPD Blue) playing her neglectful husband.

Elba talked about his own familiarity with No Good Deed director Sam Miller. “Sam and I have worked on Luther quite a bit,” said Elba. “He’s a very good director (and has) a good eye for thriller and tension, and we needed that. We also wanted to bring a slightly different aesthetic to the film. It’s an American film and it has that Friday night popcorn (feel). But this is quite dark and edgy – the way we shot it. We tried to make it feel really claustrophobic and Sam does that really well.”

Elba, who also served as an executive producer No Good Deed and is an associate producer on Luther, is also setting his sights on directing a feature down the road. Thanks to his extensive work on television (The Wire, Luther) and film (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Pacific Rim), directing should be a natural process for Elba.

I asked Elba what strengths he would bring to a project as a director. Click on the Soundcloud bar to hear Elba’s answer:

‘Maps To The Stars’ With Julianne Moore Set for 2015 Release

0

Per Variety, director David Cronenberg’s Los Angeles set drama Maps to the Stars, will not hit the U.S. until early 2015. Focus World snagged the U.S. distribution rights to the drama from Entertone One (eOne), and reportedly Focus World has not decided if they will release the movie, which is headlined by Julianne Moore and Robert Pattinson, on VOD (the safe bet is a theatrical & VOD release).

The story, penned by Bruce Wagner (Wild Palms, I’m Losing You), features Moore as Havana Segrand, a has been actress who finds herself working withing the shadows of her legendary mother Clarice (Sarah Gadon). John Cusack is a TV self-help therapist whose emotionally scarred daughter Agatha (Mia Waskikowska) serves as Havana’s personal assistant. Robert Pattinson, who previously worked with David Cronenberg in Maps to the Stars, plays a limo driver who becomes fast friends with Agatha.

Moore won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for Map to the Stars, and one would assume Focus World will give the film a limited run in December for Oscar consideration.

Whatever the case may be, Moore has always been a professional, and although her career is filled with excellent work, she remains a humble and hardworking actress.

Atari Unleashes New ‘Alone In the Dark’ & ‘Haunted House’ This Fall

0

It’s a big year for Atari, as they are re-imagining two popular titles for the PC starting this fall with Alone in the Dark: Illumination and Haunted House: Cryptic Graves. Atari has released preview trailers for both titles, and below is a sneak peek at Alone in the Dark: Illumination:

“Atari was at the forefront of the survival horror game genre, with both Haunted House and Alone in the Dark shaping the category throughout the ’80s and ’90,” said Atari CEO Fred Chesnais. “The modern and updated versions of these games will resonate with enthusiasts of the classics worldwide, and engage new fans through suspenseful, action-packed PC gameplay.”

The original Haunted House was released back in 1982, and Haunted House: Cryptic Graves will have players communicate with the dead to solve puzzles and avoid traps. The goal is to purge the evil beings that lurk the Abbadon Grange Estate.

Alone in the Dark: Illumination features cooperative multiplayer mode, as players attempt to rid a town that’s filled with “blood-thirsty beasts” and cleanse the environment of the darkness that has cursed the land. Playable characters in the game include the Hunter, Witch, Engineer, and Priest.

Todd Chrisley (“Chrisley Knows Best”) On Joys of Fatherhood

0

The second season of USA’s reality series Chrisley Knows Best premieres Tuesday, October 14 (10 pm et/pt), and fans of the show obviously know patriarch Todd Chrisley is a disciplinarian when it comes to raising his children. Amidst Todd’s colorful witticisms (“crazy runs deep!” is his signature comment) lies his dedication to raising a moral, respectful, and responsible family with his wife Julie.

During the interviews for Chrisley Knows Best, Todd Chrisley says his stern but loving approach to parenting stems from experience.

“I do think the family dynamic has changed. Fortunately for me, I only know how to parent one way and that was the way I was parented – so that was 46 years ago. That’s how we parent and we want to make sure that our children are having the same values instilled in them that were instilled in us.”

I also asked Todd Chrisley about the joys of parenting, and he gave a pretty straightforward and touching answer (his kids Chase, Savannah, and wife Julie are also in the video). Check out the clip below for Todd’s answer:
