Big Brother, Week 9: O Paulie, Where Art Thou?

0

Well the worm has certainly turned since we last checked in on the Big Brother house. If you had been watching only the show, you would suspect that Paulie and “The Executives” alliance was clearing an easy path to a “Final Five” deal, but those who had watched the live feeds realized it had been a tumultuous week in the Big Brother house, details of which didn’t fit within the double eviction episode, but were spelled out during the next airing.

Natalie Portman takes a huge chunk of ambition and runs with it as the writer, director, and lead actress behind A Tale of Love and Darkness, a feature based on Amos Oz’s coming-of-age bestseller. This is Portman’s feature writing and directing debut, and thanks to her deep connection to the material the narrative is infused with a self-assured and subtly evocative flair.

The comparisons to Casablanca were inevitable, as To Have and Have Not has resistance fighters, a memorable piano player (Hoagy Carmichael), and smoldering chemistry between the leads. But even then and now 72 years later, To Have and Have Not is a classic that stands on its own, and Warner Archive Collection has done a great job with this Blu-ray release. Below are five reasons to love To Have and Have Not.

Director/writer Theodore Melfi crafted a first rate tale with his 2014 feature St. Vincent, and now he’s behind the camera with Hidden Figures, the true story of three African-American women (Empire’s Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe, Octavia Spencer) who were part of NASA’s operation to send astronaut John Glenn (Glenn Powell) in orbit.

As a huge fan of director/writer Dan Fogleman’s 2015 feature Danny Collins as well as his scripts for Cars and Crazy, Stupid, Love, I’m definitely looking forward to his upcoming TV series This Is Us.

Before he became known as one of cinema’s finest filmmakers, director Louis Malle was also a French New Wave trendsetter thanks to the film noir classic Elevator to the Gallows. The new digital restoration of the film, which is headlined by Jeanne Moreau, has its exclusive engagement starting today at Landmark’s Nuart Theatre thanks to Rialto Pictures.

5 Reasons To Love ‘Joshy’ (Thomas Middleditch, Nick Kroll)

“5 Reasons” is a new thing I’m doing for Deepest Dream, and I’ll only be employing it for films, music, and games that I really dig. Out in theaters and On Demand today, Joshy is a seriocomic tale of the titular character’s (Thomas Middleditch) weekend getaway with his friends in Ojai, Ca.

The excursion is actually one borne out of necessity, as the home they rented for Joshy’s engagement party is now being utilized for a few days of boozing and debauchery (Joshy’s relationship with his fiancee, played by Alison Brie, ended on a tragic note).

BigBrother167

The Big Brother season is midway through and it’s starting to look as though Paulie is sailing toward the big prize, but could this be the week that the remaining houseguests wise up? It’s a double eviction week and if ever there were a time to make a big move, this would be it.

DVD Pick: 5 Reasons To Love ‘The American Side’

I woke up at 2:30 this morning, unable to shake The American Side, a first rate neo-noir that isn’t afraid to wear its homage driven heart on its sleeve. Director/writer Jenna Ricker takes those hardboiled film noirs of the 1940s-50s and the conspiracy filled thrillers of the 1970s (The Parallax View, Winter Kills) and gives us a cinematic dish that’s worth the calories. Cinephiles will gorge on the various easter eggs and references in the film, and actually the less said about this film, at least story wise, the better. Below are five reasons to love The American Side.
