Directed and co-written by Sophie Hyde, Jimpa centers on Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), a non-binary teenager who wants to live in Amsterdam with her grandfather Jim (John Lithgow) for a year. The bad news is her filmmaker mom Hannah (Olivia Colman) and her dad (Daniel Henshall) still want Frances to live with them in Adelaide, Australia. This is just one of the plot points in this evocative and beautifully structured narrative. Check out our CinemAddicts review below!

Olivia Colman is Hannah, a filmmaker who is making a movie inspired by her father Jim’s (John Litghow) life. Hannah, however, has a complicated relationship with him, and her daughter Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) absolutely idolizes her “Jimpa.”

Running at 113 minutes, Jimpa may frustrate some viewers who want a streamlined story. There are several sub-plots within the movie and even the supporting players get their chance to shine. Some may see this as aimless storytelling, but director Sophie Hyde crafts the narrative with a confident and subtle hand. The movie is partly inspired by her own life, and her non-binary child Aud Mason-Hyde does a convincing job as Frances, the teenager who is trying to find her place in the world.
