“You’re gonna love it or hate,” says director/writer Matthew Freheit. Shot in Los Angeles, “Iconic” centers on Rose (Emma Jade), a beauty influencer whose perception of reality may be on its last legs. Alyssa Anthony is Lilly, Rose’s new girlfriend who is understandably concerned over Rose’s well-being. Shot with a ton of visual style and editing panache, “Iconic,” as Freheit attests, is divisive. Filmmaker Matthew Freiheit, who lives in Downtown Los Angeles, said “Iconic” is a love letter to the city. “This is where we are at as a society,” said Freiheit. “In terms of, all right, there are all these nice high rises that is mixed in with the absolute despair of income inequality and the decline of the United States. It’s really upsetting for a lot of people to see, but it’s the reality of the world.”

Another aspect of “Iconic,” along with its vivid and gritty portrayal of Los Angeles, centers on the negative effects of social media. “You see how it affects different people’s mental health,” said Alyssa Anthony. “I liked to imagine that Lily had a backstory of really dealing with a lot of issues and bullying. Something has made her this way . . . and I think a lot of people are going through dark things in this time.”
