Endless Cookie, an animated documentary centering on the family of Seth and Pete Scriver, received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Documentary. It hits theaters today in Los Angeles (Laemmle Glendale) and New York City (Quad Cinema), and the Scrivers talked to Deepest Dream about their critically acclaimed project. This 97-minute narrative, complete with surreal and inspired flourishes, is totally engrossing and comes highly recommended. Check out our discussion below!

After receiving a grant to make a documentary, Seth Scriver travels from Toronto to Shamattawa to visit Pete and his family. Endless Cookie details the fun and hard work that the Scrivers put in making their documentary, and the journey is populated with a ton of stories and frequent interruptions by family members, locals and animals.

What started out as a simple story in Endless Cookie evolved out of necessity.

”It was only by accident that it became a family portrait,” said Seth Scriver. “We were just literally trying to record one story off of Peter and or we were recording a couple stories. But (we) kept getting interrupted by the kids. Pete lives in a four bedroom house with eight kids. And then we started realizing like, oh my God, this is so annoying.”

“ A neighbor would come over and knock on the door,” added Scriver. “And I was just like, ‘oh God, this is like maddening!’ But then we started to realize – actually that was pretty funny. A bunch of the kids have put themselves in the movie, like we should add them. Once we realized it actually was becoming this family portrait by accident, we went with that.”

As for the Endless Cookie acclaim, Seth Scriver admits he and his brother are in utter “disbelief.”

“It’s  been overwhelming,” added Pete Scriver. “I’m totally surprised every time we win an award.”
