Writer/director Ryan David’s latest movie Futra Days has its in-person premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival on Saturday, August 20. David describes his sci-fi/relationship drama as a “heady.” It is also an immersive tale that may confound viewers or grab them hook, line, and sinker. I am a Futra Days fan, so it was a pleasure to learn more about David’s creative process behind his movie.

“I’m excited because San Jose is great,” said Ryan David on premiering his feature at the Cinequest Film Festival. “It’s about the tech community in San Jose and Stanford and all the things around that. It’s so interesting to me and I think that community will embrace that a little more.”

Futra Days centers on Sean Graves (Brandon Sklenar), a guy who is trying to save his turbulent and passionate relationship with his soulmate (Tania Raymonde). Sean is referred to a medical company which develops a technology that allows for time travel, and now he tries to examine the future and attempt to salvage his relationship with his lover.

The picture immediately reminded me, via its visual compositions, non-linear narrative, and eye catching editing, of a Nicolas Roeg (Don’t Look Now, Walkabout). During the interview, David referenced the Roeg feature Bad Timing as an influence. David resides in Portugal and travels extensively to Los Angeles for his work, and he also discussed why he chose Portugal as a means of deepening his own filmmaking journey.

Audio version of the Ryan David Interview is up on CinemAddicts:

“I’m really trying to make art and films that remind audiences how smart they really are,” said David. “Even though (Futra Days) is a very heady and philosophical film, I think I really went back to the well of love stories. I don’t see many movies about love. I see a lot of movies about falling in love or about romantic and sexual attraction. But I don’t see movies about love anymore. And love is kind of the hard conversations you have with people when you don’t know if you want to be with them anymore.”
