The “Megalopolis” trailer is now upon us, and director Francis Ford Coppola is cleary on the offensive. Beginning with a voiceover that claims “true genius is misunderstood,” the trailer shows critical drubbings of his features “The Godfather,” “Apocalypse Now,” and “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” Then we cut to lead character Cesar (Adam Driver) and witness his visionary plans for the future! Subtlety is not a part of this trailer. Check it out and share your thoughts!

“Megalopolis” centers on Cesar (Adam Driver), an artist looking to create an idealistic future. In his way is Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancaralo Esposito) who wants to keep things status quo. Nathalie Emmanuel is the Mayor’s daughter Julia, and her love for Cesar divides her loyalties.

The A-list cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter and Dustin Hoffman.

Francis Ford Coppola has discussed his dream project for years, and if this movie is his swan song, it should encapsulate a celebrated career that continues to divide critics and cinephiles. Coppola has proven to be ahead of his time, often times at the expense of his career momentum. His ambitious musical “One From The Heart,” budgeted at $26 million when it was released in 1981. Coppola self-financed the project and nearly went bankrupt in the process.

Coppola spent $120 million for Megalopolis, so this is easily his biggest gamble to date. The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 53%.

“Megalopolis” hits theaters September 27. Let us know if you will be watching this epic!!
