Flick City: Gina Torres On The “Hope” That Propels “The Shawshank Redemption”

I had the chance to interview Pearson actress Gina Torres at the NBC Universal Press Tour recently, and during she talked about her favorite movie. Check out the video below as Torres talks about The Shawshank Redemption!

Gina Torres headlines Pearson as Jessica Pearson (aka one of Suits’ most memorable characters), the disbarred NYC lawyer who is now getting acclimated to the intricate and often corrupt nature of Chicago politics. Serving as Chicago Mayor Bobby Novak’s (Morgan Spector) go-to fixer, Jessica is determined to always stay one step ahead of the game. The USA Network series, which is a Suits spinoff, co-stars Bethany Joy Lenz and Simon Kassianades.

Here is what Gina Torres had to say about The Shawshank Redemption (video is below the transcription):

“My favorite film, actually for the same reasons, is The Shawshank Redemption. What happens to the human spirit when it decides that hope is not an option and what happens to the human spirit when it realizes that hope is the only option? You see both of those realities.

The indoctrinated mind. The incarcerated mind. The institutionalized mind. The things that we do to ourselves to make our surroundings make sense and be okay versus just a dogged, relentless need to expand and be free and feel the sun on your face again. Or the rain on your body and all of that after swimming through five football fields of s**t (laughs).

And it’s just beautifully directed and it’s beautifully written and the performances are extraordinary.”
