Directed by Colin Hanks, Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) centers on the band’s return to Paris in February 2016, three months after the attack at Bataclan Theatre. The 84-minute documentary is a candid look at how the group, obviously still reeling from the tragedy, united to put music and their fans (and family) at the forefront.

Most of the documentary focuses on interviews with co-founders Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme, and initiates to both Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal will discover the innate bond between the musicians. The pair met in high school after Homme saved Hughes from being bullied at a party, and ultimately it was Homme who inspired Hughes to become a rocker (their debut album Peace, Love, Death Metal was released in 2004).

The actual attack on the Bataclan, which claimed the lives of 89 people, is also recounted by the band members as well as fans who were at the show (some of whom attended the band’s return performance in February). U2’s Bono and The Edge are also interviewed in the documentary (Eagles of Death Metal performed at a U2 concert after the incident).

Though much of  Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) is absolutely harrowing, the documentary also spotlights the close friendship between Hughes and Homme while also showing the connection the group has with its fans.

On a much more superficial note, the Eagles of Death Metal are a hard driving rock band that captures the genre’s throwback swagger (like Led Zeppelin and Faces), and after watching Hanks’ well done documentary, I’ll definitely give these guys (as well as Queens of the Stone Age) a deeper listen.

Eagles of Death Metal bassist Matt McJunkins (A Perfect Circle), drummer Julian Dorio (Homme didn’t attend the Bataclan Theatre concert), and guitarist Dave Catching also are interviewed in the doc.
