Directed by Rick Korn, A Father’s Promise is a documentary about musician/activist Mark Barden’s determination to make an impact in gun violence in America. Barden’s son Daniel was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary, and the documentary follows his journey from towards activism. One integral element in his mission is rooted in music. Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Karen Fairchild, and Daryl DMC McDaniels are among the interviewees and performers in A Father’s Promise. Korn talked to Deepest Dream about his documentary.

It is understandable to feel helpless with the shootings that continue to take place in our country. Director Rick Korn and Mark Barden believe there are steps people can take to help.

“There are things that we can do as individuals, not just as artists or filmmakers, that can help prevent gun violence in our communities,” said Korn. “Things like volunteering. And it doesn’t mean that you necessarily that you have to volunteer for a gun violence prevention organization. You can volunteer for an after school music program. Or a sports program that keeps kids out of gangs and off the streets and safe. (This is) what we’re doing with Artist for Action and what Mark’s focus is with Sandy Hook Promise.

There are things we can do. And they’ve created these programs that are in all 50 states.

A Father’s Promise, executive produced by Sheryl Crow, is now playing in theaters. Check out its official site for details. Full interview with Rick Korn is below:
