Gene Gallerano And William Pisciotta Discuss Soundstage And Anamorphic Aesthetic of ‘The Yeti’

The Yeti, a creature feature directed by Gene Gallerano and William Pisciotta, delivers visual immersion from a grounded place. The filmmakers love the expansive, Panavision look of such movies as Battle of the Bulge and It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and that visual depth is evident in their feature. Gallerano and Pisciotta talked to Deepest Dream about their ambitious tale which hits AMC Theaters April 4th and 8th and arrives on Digital April 10.

Merriell Sunday Sr. (Corbin Bernsen) and explorer Hollis Bannister (William Sadler) have gone missing in Alaska. A brave team, which includes Hollis’ daughter Ellie (Brittany Allen), embark on a rescue mission which is derailed thanks to a monster in the wilderness.

If you’re looking for a CGI, green screen driven adventure, you’ve come to the wrong place. Most of The Yeti was filmed on a soundstage, and practical effects and sets were the name of the game.

William Sadler in “The Yeti” – Well Go USA

“We wanted to build this movie like The Revenant in a box,” said Gene Gallerano, who also stars as one of the expedition members. “We call ourseves the backyard J.J. Abrams, where we’re going for these massive films and with scope and just cinematic vision to the max. And we’re doing it sometimes in backyards that we’ve built sets – sometimes in our basements. I built a set in my mom’s attic in Texas.”

As for the visuals, William Pisciotta wanted to create “large frames” where all the characters are in it, giving The Yeti a CinemaScope aesthetic. “Nowadays I feel like everything’s really shallow, depth of field,” said Pisciotta. “It’s like super close. We tried to do it (as many of the scenes) like paintings as possible. We wanted all the characters there – very Renaissance-esque.”

***CinemAddicts host Eric Holmes talks to Pisciotta and Gallerano on our latest episode:

Joshua Enck - A Great Awakening - Poster credit: Sight & Sound Films / Roadside Attractions

Now playing in theaters, A Great Awakening focuses on the profound friendship between Benjamin Franklin (John Paul Sneed) and Reverence George Whitefield (Jonathan Blair). Director/writer Joshua Enck talked to Deepest Dream about his 129-minute feature and describes why he wanted to bring an epic feel to his narrative.

Although A Great Awakening’s target audience will be cinephiles who love faith based features, the movie also has a universal appeal. “We didn’t want to force an agenday down anybody’s throat,” said Joshua Enck. “Or anything that would prove or disprove the faith of our Founding Fathers. We wanted to tell a true story that actually happened in history and that made a major impact on this nation. Nobday can deny the impact the first great awakening had on this nation, and nobdy can deny their incredible, unlikely friendship. We believe only by providence that those two men were brought together to then spark what has become the first great awakening.”

Check out my review of A Great Awakening on this week’s CinemAddicts podcast:

The power of Reverend George Whitefield’s voice and his overall passion are spotlighted in A Great Awakening, and Enck wanted to put that presence amdist a big canvas. “We wanted a film that felt immersive and had a big scope not just in content, but literal scope,” added Enck. “Being out on the water with a big ship, or being in a coalfield or whatever it might be. This is a big story and we didn’t want people to feel claustrophobic and have it be a talking heads film.”

If you are looking for an epic film playing in your local theater this weekend, A Great Awakening might be up your alley. Share your thoughts on the movie in the comments!

Houston Kelly Talks ‘The Voice: Battle of Champions,’ And New Album ‘Right Here, Right Now’

Houston Kelly - The Voice: Battle of Champions - Griffin Nagel / NBC

Houston Kelly had a great run on The Voice: Battle of Champions as part of Team Kelly. Starting off on the Blinds with a standout performance of Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis,” Kelly went on to the Battles with Tia Durant and advanced to the Knockouts with JW Griffin. Kelly, a Memphis native and current student at University of Tennesse at Martin, talked to Deepest Dream about his time on the show and he also discussed his album Right Here, Right Now.

Kelly Clarkson described Houston Kelly as a “solid country singer” and John Legend complimented the natural “power” behind Kelly’s voice. Though Kelly has received his share of love thanks to his performances, he remains steady through it all.

“One of the things that I learned and I realized – my worth is not grounded in what I do on a stage,” said Kelly. “I follow Jesus and my worth comes from him and what he’s done for me, not any singing ability that I have or anything like that.”

“That’s been one of the things that after my Blind (audition) aired on TV, there was a momentary high and it was really cool,” added Kelly. “And I was surrounded by friends and family. But then life was regular. Nothing changed. I’m still Houston. Nothing’s different. That was one of the things I didn’t expect, but in a way I knew it was coming. So in reflection of what was happening there, it really made me think about what do I put my identity in and how am I gonna portray that identity as I move forward.”

For a deeper insight into Kelly’s musicianship and songwriting, check out his debut album Right Here, Right Now which he discussed in detail during the interview.

“I’m really proud of (Right Here, Right Now),” said Kelly. “Part of the reason I wanted to go ahead and release that was because I knew of some upcoming opportunities and I said if people are gonna have opportunity to maybe hear me, I want ’em to hear something fresh,” said Kelly. “And I want ’em to be able to hear something that I’m proud of. Something that I wanna play at shows. And so the band and I – we got together and some of the songs are co-written.”

“One of my good friends, Ella Gibson, she wrote with me on a few of them. I will vomit words out when it comes to songwriting. And that’s something that she sat down and I remember her telling me,” said Kelly. “She said, ‘Houston, does rhyme scheme mean anything to you?’ And we all busted out laughing and because she was right. So I’ve learned a lot from her.

During The Voice: Battle of Champions, Jeremy Keith referred to himself as a “professional singer” in front of the coaches, and he elaborated on that description in our interview. “I would consider a professional singer anyone who, number one, you can make a living off of your profession,” said Jeremy Keith, who has toured with Stephanie Mills and been an After 7 member throughout his 20-year career. “And you’ve put in the work to call yourself a professional. I also thing it’s someone that can work in multiple enviroments. I think maybe that’s the added plus.”

Keith delivered a three chair turn during the Blinds for his rendition of Freddie Jackson’s “You Are My Lady.” During the Battles, he sang a little Spanish with Aziz Guerra for their performance of Stevie Wonder’s “My Cherie Amour.” “I think I’ve always challenged myself because I was always around people who were so much better than me,” said Keith. “I felt these people are who I want to be as a professional singer. And just always reaching. It made me want to work harder, and it encouraged me being around those people – my friends who are amazing, talented people. I really attribute a lot of it to my family and my surroundings.”

“Pursuing a career in music is extremely hard to do if you don’t have that core belief in your own value,” said Natasha Blaine, who admitted that ‘trial and error’ is part of solidifying that self-belief. “At the end of the day, you are the one who’s deciding to put yourself out there and create more music. “It’s great if other people valiidate that, but at the end of the day, it’s most important for that validation to come from within.”

Check out Blaine’s latest single “Own The Way (Pull The Thread),” which she described in the interview as a personal song:

Blaine elaborated on what she learned from The Voice: Battle of Champions. “The experience taught me so many things,” said Blaine. “But I think the main takeaway was how unique and specific my identity as an artist is. And it really showed, I think, throughout the different performances that I performed. I have a very unique and specific vision for who I am as an artist. This experience showed me that what I have is a really specific niche of music which is totally marketable and opeople are responding to it.”

Bay Simpson, The Voice: Battle of Champions - Griffin Nagel / NBC

Bay Simpson battles it out tonight with fellow Team Adam member Alexia Jayy on The Voice: Battle of Champions. Simpson talked to Deepest Dream about his experience on the show and he also shares the keys to his songwriting and being a frontman. Full interview with Simpson is in our post!

Along with pursuing his solo career, Bay Simpson is also a member of a band called The Family (which features his own loved ones). “Everybody in my family is a really awesome musician, so we decided to just start a group and put out music,” said Simpson. “But mainly locked in on my solo thing at the moment. I still play with a backing band and it’s always a bit of a challenge – nobody cares about your stuff as much as you do.”

Part of being a frontman, from Simpson’s perspective, is to be supportive of his bandmates and he admits he can be a pretty “strict band leader.” “I try to just let the guys know that I care about them and that they’re doing a good job as much as I can, and hope that they respect the music.”

One of the best compliments of this season was when John Legend described Bay Simpson’s voice as “weird,” which Simpson took as a “cool compliment.” “I don’t want to sound like everybody else,” said Simpson. “I want to be identifiable. That’s the main thing for me – the best thing you can be is unique.”

Speaking of unique, check out the Bay Simpson single “Where I Do I Go From Her.”

Jaeden Martell And Asa Butterfield Talk “Loneliness” And “Empathy” Behind ‘Our Hero, Balthazar’

0
Our Hero Balthazar - Picturehouse

The critically acclaimed feature Our Hero, Balthazar features Jaeden Martell as the titular character, a rich New York City teenager who tries to gain attention from posting tear-filled reaction videos online. Balthazar’s actions, however, are not genuine, and he embarks on a misguided mission to Texas in an attempt to stop an individual named Solomon (Asa Butterfield) whom he believes has a propensity for violence. Directed and co-written by Oscar Boyson, this film definitely packs a punch with its tightly wound narrative. Martell and Butterfield talked to Deepest Dream about Our Hero, Balthazar, which is now playing in New York.

Jaeden Martell in “Our Hero, Balthazar” (Picturehouse)

Although Balthazar and Solomon may seem to have very little in common on the surface, they might not be that different from one another. “We got a bunch of loneliness which comes from lack of parents that are opinionated,” said Jaeden Martell. “A lack of father figures, and sort of a total misunderstanding. When you think once you’re misunderstood, it’s easy to bury yourself in that and then just keep going deeper and deeper and trying to look for a way to be accepted. (Balthazar and Solomon) are very similar.”

Asa Butterfield in “Our Hero, Balthazar” – Picturehouse

“I describe Solomon as someone who every time he tries to do something and fix something, it blows up in his
face even when it’s not his fault,” added Asa Butterfield. “He’s a real victim of circumstance. (Solomon) is a victim of America and this sort of massive divide that is there right now.”

Sherry Cola Talks ‘You’re Dating A Narcissist’ And Its “Different Perspectives On Love”

Sherry Cola - Brainstorm Media

You’re Dating A Narcissist! centers on Judy (Marisa Tomei), a New York psychologist who travels to Los Angeles with her best friend Diane (Sherry Cola) for a very special mission. The psychologist’s daughter Eva (Ciara Bravo) is in love with a charming doctor named Theo (Marco Pigossi). Judy believes Theo is a narcissist and she is bent on stopping their impending wedding! Cola talked to Deepest Dream about her latest film, which gave her the chance to bond with Tomei.

Sherry Cola and Marisa Tomei in “You’re Dating A Narcissist” – Brainstorm Media

Directed and co-written by Ann Marie Allison, You’re Dating A Narcisssist! started shooting back in 2023. “It’s been a while and she and I have kept in touch,” said Sherry Cola, who initially met Tomei, co-star Ciara Bravo and director/co-writer Ann Marie Allison over lunch. “We definitely just have this love for each other because we hit it off right off the bat. The friendship between Diane and Judy feels so legit on the screen because Marisa and I had that magic in real life.”

Check out our review (and recommend) of You’re Dating Narcissist on CinemAddicts:

In our CinemAddicts review, co-host Eric Holmes cited Cola as the best thing about the romantic comedy (he, of course, also loved Tomei in the flick). Cola has received her share of accolades over the years, and whether its success on series work (Good Trouble) or in cinema (Joy Ride), Cola has carved out a successful and busy career.

“I’m still pinching myself that it’s happening,” said Cola, who gives props to such actors as Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, and Jackie Chan. ” I was born in Shanghai, China. I’m an immigrant. The fact that I’ve ever even been on a billboard feels like a fever dream, so none of this will ever get old because I also feel like with representation, we’re still catching up. There’s been progress, but we’re still not necessarily prioritized, in the Asian space, in the queer space, all of the above.”
