Jaeden Martell And Asa Butterfield Talk “Loneliness” And “Empathy” Behind ‘Our Hero, Balthazar’

0
Our Hero Balthazar - Picturehouse

The critically acclaimed feature Our Hero, Balthazar features Jaeden Martell as the titular character, a rich New York City teenager who tries to gain attention from posting tear-filled reaction videos online. Balthazar’s actions, however, are not genuine, and he embarks on a misguided mission to Texas in an attempt to stop an individual named Solomon (Asa Butterfield) whom he believes has a propensity for violence. Directed and co-written by Oscar Boyson, this film definitely packs a punch with its tightly wound narrative. Martell and Butterfield talked to Deepest Dream about Our Hero, Balthazar, which is now playing in New York.

Although Balthazar and Solomon may seem to have very little in common on the surface, they might not be that different from one another. “We got a bunch of loneliness which comes from lack of parents that are opinionated,” said Jaeden Martell. “A lack of father figures, and sort of a total misunderstanding. When you think once you’re misunderstood, it’s easy to bury yourself in that and then just keep going deeper and deeper and trying to look for a way to be accepted. (Balthazar and Solomon) are very similar.”

“I describe Solomon as someone who every time he tries to do something and fix something, it blows up in his
face even when it’s not his fault,” added Asa Butterfield. “He’s a real victim of circumstance. (Solomon) is a victim of America and this sort of massive divide that is there right now.”

Sherry Cola Talks ‘You’re Dating A Narcissist’ And Its “Different Perspectives On Love”

Sherry Cola - Brainstorm Media

You’re Dating A Narcissist! centers on Judy (Marisa Tomei), a New York psychologist who travels to Los Angeles with her best friend Diane (Sherry Cola) for a very special mission. The psychologist’s daughter Eva (Ciara Bravo) is in love with a charming doctor named Theo (Marco Pigossi). Judy believes Theo is a narcissist and she is bent on stopping their impending wedding! Cola talked to Deepest Dream about her latest film, which gave her the chance to bond with Tomei.

Directed and co-written by Ann Marie Allison, You’re Dating A Narcisssist! started shooting back in 2023. “It’s been a while and she and I have kept in touch,” said Sherry Cola, who initially met Tomei, co-star Ciara Bravo and director/co-writer Ann Marie Allison over lunch. “We definitely just have this love for each other because we hit it off right off the bat. The friendship between Diane and Judy feels so legit on the screen because Marisa and I had that magic in real life.”

Check out our review (and recommend) of You’re Dating Narcissist on CinemAddicts:

In our CinemAddicts review, co-host Eric Holmes cited Cola as the best thing about the romantic comedy (he, of course, also loved Tomei in the flick). Cola has received her share of accolades over the years, and whether its success on series work (Good Trouble) or in cinema (Joy Ride), Cola has carved out a successful and busy career.

“I’m still pinching myself that it’s happening,” said Cola, who gives props to such actors as Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, and Jackie Chan. ” I was born in Shanghai, China. I’m an immigrant. The fact that I’ve ever even been on a billboard feels like a fever dream, so none of this will ever get old because I also feel like with representation, we’re still catching up. There’s been progress, but we’re still not necessarily prioritized, in the Asian space, in the queer space, all of the above.”

Addison Heimannn Talks Alien Sex, Anxiety Loops, And Inspired Creation Of ‘Touch Me’

0
Touch Me - Yellow Veil Pictures

Have you ever seen a movie featuring alien tentacle sex, cult addiction, and mental trauma? Touch Me, written and directed by refreshingly out of this planet director Addison Heimann, covers those topics in an immersive and propulsive fashion with his stars Olivia Taylor Dudley, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jordan Gavaris, and Marlene Forte. Heimann talked to CinemAddicts host Eric Holmes about the personal origins of his critically acclaimed feature, which hits theaters March 27.

Touch Me – Yellow Veil Pictures

Addison Heimann begins the interview discussing his obsessive compulsive disorder which he jokes is “a really fun thing to have.” Although it gives him the ability to be hyper-focused, it can also lead to a “negative thought spiral.”

“In order to kind of break the anxiety loop is to do something called exposure and response prevention therapy,” says Heimann. “Which one version of it is where you take your deep, disturbing thoughts and you (transform) them in a completely fantastical and ridiculous way.”

For example, if one has a negative thought of their boyfriend breaking up with them, then one can imagine, in Heimann’s words, “unicorns having an orgy.”

Jordan Gavaris and Olivia Taylor Dudley in “Touch Me” – Yellow Veil Pictures

That surreal perspective informs Touch Me, the story of a young woman (Oliva Taylor Dudley) who takes her best friend (Jordan Gavaris) to her ex-lover’s (Lou Taylor Pucci) mansion. The catch is Mr. Right is actually an alien, and he has a manipulative woman (Marlene Forte) doing a ton of his dirty work.

Heimann is well aware Touch Me is a divisive feature. “You either are on board because you’re a freak like I am,” says Heimann, who previously directed the 2022 movie Hypochondriac. “Or you absolutely want to run away from the hills and think that I’m a person who should be lit on fire. When you have that kind of specificity, you end up finding the freaks.”

Consider all three of us “freaks” in CinemAddicts, since we all love the film. We reviewed and praised the movie last week:

Charity Wakefield Talks “Joyful” ‘Preschool’ Experience Working With Director Josh Duhamel

If you’re looking for a ridiculous comedy (in a good way) that ultimately wears its heart on its sleeve, then Preschool might fit the bill. Two dads (Josh Duhamel, Michael Socha) want their respective child to be given the last spot at a prestigious preschool. Charity Wakefield and Antonio Thomas are the wives who must endure their guys’ immaturity and selfishness. Wakefield (Wolf Hall, The Great) talked to Deepest Dream about why she loved making the film.

“It was a ball, to be honest with you” said Charity Wakefield, who also credited writer Richard D’Ovidio for not being too precious with the script. “I absolutely loved filming this film. Preschool was always going to be a fun thing to do, but Josh Duhamel let us be free, and he invited us to improvise along the script. We would do the scenes as scripted, and then we were allowed to do several takes where it was unscripted, and then sometimes we’d go back and patch the two together.”

Having acted in film and television for over 20 years, Wakefield is also eyeing a path to directing. She recently directed the promenade play Pattledom, and that interactive experience is just one aspect of her expanding career. “I feel like I just got out of film school,” said Wakefield. “Which is not true, but I’ve done quite a few projects now learning on the job. And again, I’m inspired by Josh because he is someone that is a natural director, but I don’t think he’s had any kind of formal training to do that. He’s had so much experience, obviously on particularly huge productions, and Josh is really a people’s person. He’s interested in what other people are doing.”

You're Dating A Narcissist - Brainstorm Media

Opening in theaters Friday, You’re Dating A Narcissist! centers on a worried psychologist (Marisa Tomei) who immediately leaves for Los Angeles with her best friend (Sherry Cola). The pair are on a mission to stop her daughter (Ciara Bravo) from marrying a charming doctor (Marco Pigossi). Directed and co-written by Ann Marie Allison, the feature has a refreshing about of depth. Bravo and Pigossi talked to Deepest Dream about the layers behind You’re Dating A Narcissist.

“I felt like it took this classic rom-com structure, but then brought in all of these beautiful nuances that just brought it to life,” said Bravo. “And sort of refreshed the genre in a way that I found very exciting.”

“It’s really refreshing,” added Marco Pigossi. “Ciara used this word and I love it. The script is a rom-com but there’s so many elements and many layers. And it’s done in such a smart way in telling that story. I just wanted to be a part of it.”

Marco Pigossi in “You’re Dating a Narcissist” – Brainstorm Media

The big mystery of the movie centers on the doctor, who may or may not be bad news for the psychologist’s daughter.

In real life, is it an easy thing for Bravo and Pigossi to spot narcissists?

“I think if it wasn’t difficult to spot ’em, they wouldn’t be a true narcissist,” said Bravo. “They’re really emotionally smart people.”

Pigossi concurs with Bravo’s assessment. “They’re not easy to identify and of course they don’t know they are,” said Pigossi. They’re fascinating because in the beginning they can reach you. They know everything you need (and) know how to please you. (Narcissists) know what scares you, and they will do everything to show you how much you need them”

During the interview, Bravo and Pigossi talked about why acting is an integral part of their life. The quick chat ends with the actors recommending projects from their resume that they would recommend (Bravo picks Wayne and Pigossi chooses Brilliant Minds).

“The thing that drew me towards John Legend was his ability for songwriting and his emotion (and ability to) connect when he performs,” said Ashley Marina. “That’s something that I strive to do when I perform.”

**full interview with Ashley Marina:

Along with being a performer, Marina is also a devoted songwriter. During her younger years, Marina was influenced by such “big diva” singers like Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. As she matured as an artist, things organically changed. “Once I started writing my own music, I kind of fell into the full country genre,” said Marina. “That’s really become my thing. I want to be a storyteller, play the piano and sit down (with) my guitar. Even though I can sing these big ballads, I really want to be my own person – if that makes sense.”

Having a great “voice” and talent is just part of the equation for Steele, who used writing in his journal and meditation to keep him focused on his craft. “I would get up every say and (say) ‘I’m a star’ and ‘I will get a triple chair turn.’ I would repeatedly say these things and write in my journal on how I want this experience to turn out for me. And I can say I manifested it and it worked in my favor.”
