‘Live’ Find ‘The Turn’ With New Album & Singer

0

It’s a new chapter for Live, as they forge ahead sans Ed Kowalczyk and continue their path with new lead vocalist Chris Shinn. Their new album The Turn is also on the horizon for an October release. Jerry Harrison, who also produced Live’s previous albums Mental Jewelry, Throwing Copper, and The Distance to Here, is also lending his production skills to The Turn.

As for the choice of Shinn, guitarist Chad Taylor sees the choice as a relative no-brainer, as he brings “a new dimension of musical skill and credibility to the table.” “The only name suggested by all three (including bassist Patrick Dahlheimer and drummer Chad Gracey) of us was Chris Shinn,” adds Taylor. “There was no audition process. We simply called our friend and asked if he wanted to make Live music.”

The group, have launched a PledgeMusic campaign with a portion of the proceeds going to Musicians on Call. Fans who pre-order the album have various bundle options, one of which includes a Skype guitar lesson from Taylor. For more info, go to PledgeMusic’s official site.

Belle & Sebastian Frontman Crafts Sublime Pop Life With ‘God Help The Girl’

0

Although Belle & Sebastian have regrouped and recorded a new album in Atlanta, Georgia, founding member Stuart Murdoch also has cinema on his mind thanks to his feature directing debut God Help The Girl.

Set in Glasgow, the storyline centers on Eve (Emily Browning), a woman who’s blessed with both singing and songwriting skills. Overnight success is not in the offing, however, as constant hospital supervision and dependence on medication have their share of challenges on our ambitious protagonist. Upon befriending fellow music lovers Cassie (Game of Thrones’ Hannah Murray) and James (Olly Hernandez), Eve may have a band and a group of friends to call her own.

Eve’s story, as well as the music that infuses her universe, was previously released as a God Help The Girl album from Stuart Murdoch back in 2009, and now Murdoch has released a soundtrack and the aforementioned film to add different colors to his painting.

On a surface level, one can enjoy God Help The Girl for the catchy and playfully choreographed numbers that are featured in the story (the movie is a mixture of musical, fantasy, and drama). During my interview with Stuart Murdoch, I asked him if God Help The Girl’s pop music holds much more layers upon closer look.

Check out Stuart Murdoch’s answer below, as he ties in Belle & Sebastian’s creative ambitions with the type of songwriting (and storytelling) that’s featured in God Help The Girl.

“Without sounding like too much hubris, the songs do quite come naturally to me. That’s what I’ve been doing all this time. I had a basic idea when Belle & Sebastian got together that we would try and write the best pop music we could because I was in love with hit music all the way through the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.

We would try to write the best pop music – we wouldn’t be indie pop. We would be pop music – but what we would be writing about, the words would maybe be darker. The words would be more honest than just kind of the frothy music from the ’60s and ’70s. You talk about how you feel. So naturally there’s more going on underneath the surface. Maybe you could say the same for (God Help The Girl).”

God Help The Girl (Not Rated, 111 minutes) hits theaters and Vimeo On Demand September 5.

The Mysteries of Laura, premiering September 24 on NBC (8 pm et/pt), stars Debra Messing as the titular NYPD homicide detective and mother of two misbehaving kids. Couple that with an impending divorce with a fellow cop named Jake (Josh Lucas), and Laura’s plate is more than full.

“I think that she compartamentalizes,” says Messing, who also starred in NBC’s series Smash. “And work is her domain and she is at the top of her domain. To have (Jake) come in who represents family and all of the complications that come with divorcing and co-parenting. For him to be her boss, it’s just a nightmare.”

In the video clip below, Messing, who did the interview with Lucas, talks about how she relates to Laura’s  on the job “hyper-focus.”  She also can commiserate with her character regarding the challenges of raising a family. Check out the video below:

The Mysteries of Laura also stars Laz Alonso and Janina Gavankar.

Jennifer Aniston’s “Life of Crime” & Career Includes Directing

0

Jennifer Aniston enters Elmore Leonard territory with Life of Crime, a movie adaptation of the late scribe’s novel The Switch. Set in late 1970s Detroit, the storyline centers on a shady real estate developer (Tim Robins) who must pay a $1 million ransom for his kidnapped wife Mickey (Jennifer Aniston). The crooks who’ve taken Mickey hostage are named Ordell (Mos Def) and Louis (John Hawkes), and they’re characters who later surface in Quentin Tarantino’s film Jackie Brown (Ordell is played by Samuel L. Jackson with Robert De Niro taking on the Louis role).

During the Life of Crime press conference that was held this week in Los Angeles, Jennifer Aniston was asked if directing was in her near future (she directed the two shorts Five and Room 10):

“Absolutely. That’s the next thing, the big sort of hurdle I want to take on. I’ve done a few short films that I just loved the experience of doing. I’m just waiting for that wonderful window and that wonderful script and that will be the next one for me.”

Whenever Aniston finds the time or the right material to direct a full length feature, don’t expect her to tackle science fiction or horror. Click on the Soundcloud bar below to hear Jennifer Aniston talk about the movies you’ll probably never see her direct:

Life of Crime hits theaters, Video On Demand, and iTunes on Friday, August 29.

Rose Leslie Finds New “Game” With “Honeymoon” Thriller

0

Known to millions of Game of Thrones fans as the fearless wildling warrior Ygritte, Rose Leslie traverses new ground with the psychological thriller Honeymoon. The narrative focuses on Paul and Bea (Penny Dreadful’s Harry Treadaway, Leslie), newlyweds who spend their honeymoon at Bea’s family cabin. With a nearby lake and seclusion as their bedside companions, the pair are ready for several days of pure bliss.

Their loving bond breaks when a nighttime venture into the woods leaves Bea a physically and emotionally changed woman. Not only does she forget how to cook French toast for breakfast (a worried Paul takes over food duties), Bea furtively continues to write her own name in a notebook. Directed by Leigh Janiak, Honeymoon is a tense, atmospheric, and ultimately scary journey into a once loving couple’s gradual undoing.

During the Honeymoon interviews (I will post a review of Honeymoon as well as other features on the film in the near future), I asked Rose Leslie about Game of Thrones and getting the chance to utter the iconic and much beloved line “You know nothing Jon Snow!” I also, in relation to Honeymoon, asked if she makes a better French Toast than Mr. Treadaway. Her response is below:

“First and foremost, I make the best French Toast. Secondly, I feel incredibly privileged and extremely humbled to be part of such a global phenomenon that is Game of Thrones. I had an utter blast for the three seasons that I was on it. And I feel so much warmth and admiration to the loyal and passionate fans and I love that they enjoy the catchphrase and they love that catchphrase. It’s a huge privilege to have been a part of it. It really is.”

Taraji P. Henson Reflects On ‘Person of Interest’ Experience

0

Opening September 12, No Good Deed centers on Terri (Taraji P. Henson) a former attorney whose days are spent living a seemingly idyllic suburban existence with her successful husband (Henry Simmons) and two kids. When the hubby leaves town, a psychotic, escaped convict (Idris Elba) knocks on her door, asking for assistance.

Realizing she’s helping the wrong guy, Terri ends up fighting for her family’s survival on a storm drenched night.

I’ll be posting more about No Good Deed closer to its release date, but I wanted to share Taraji P. Henson’s comments regarding the reception she received playing determined NYPD homicide detective Joss Carter on Person of Interest. Her answer is below:

“I didn’t realize the love people have for Carter until she was gone. The outpouring is still coming in. (Fans are saying) ‘When are you coming back?’ They’re giving the writers ideas to bring her back in flashbacks! That makes me feel good, because art is powerful in life. It can change a life – save a life. And that’s why I do what I do. I feel like God gave me a gift and I have to share it with the world. Sharing it means helping somebody. That’s why I don’t judge my characters.”
