Before he became known as one of cinema’s finest filmmakers, director Louis Malle was also a French New Wave trendsetter thanks to the film noir classic Elevator to the Gallows. The new digital restoration of the film, which is headlined by Jeanne Moreau, has its exclusive engagement starting today at Landmark’s Nuart Theatre thanks to Rialto Pictures.

The excursion is actually one borne out of necessity, as the home they rented for Joshy’s engagement party is now being utilized for a few days of boozing and debauchery (Joshy’s relationship with his fiancee, played by Alison Brie, ended on a tragic note).

I woke up at 2:30 this morning, unable to shake The American Side, a first rate neo-noir that isn’t afraid to wear its homage driven heart on its sleeve. Director/writer Jenna Ricker takes those hardboiled film noirs of the 1940s-50s and the conspiracy filled thrillers of the 1970s (The Parallax View, Winter Kills) and gives us a cinematic dish that’s worth the calories. Cinephiles will gorge on the various easter eggs and references in the film, and actually the less said about this film, at least story wise, the better.
