Abigayle Oakley received a three chair turn during The Voice: Battle of Champions for her achingly reflective rendition of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend.” The coaches hit their buttons, almost in unison, once they heard Oakley’s unique voice. Oakley, who picked Kelly Clarkson as her coach, talked to Deepest Dream about about touring, her music (give her album Recovering Optimist a listen!), and appreciating her journey on The Voice: Battle of Champions.

Since the sixth grade, Abigayle Oakley has been playing guitar. “I’m a songwriter first, so I feel like my approach to covering artists is I want to respect the original,” said Oakley. “The work that goes into writing a great song like ‘Call your Girlfriend’ by Robyn – I wanted to honor that while also creating something that is like a version that is all new.”

Fans of Oakley’s music can contact her via her website or by subscribing to her Substack.

”I’ve been really liking Substack because it’s one of the only platforms where you can share long form content,” said Oakley. “I usually post a full song that I have just written and share some notes behind the song, what inspired me, and then I always add a writing prompt so that other people can create their own thing. I try to keep that going on my Substack and it’s more of a community than, ‘Look at my thing look at this song that I wrote.’ I really wanna foster creativity for others as well.”

One of the selfish things I love about covering The Voice: Battle of Champions is listening to new music. Right at the top of that discovery list is Abigayle Oakley’s Recovering Optimist:

Abigayle Oakley takes on fellow Team Kelly artist Julia Golden tonight on The Voice: Battle of Champions (9/8c). The new episode streams the next day on Peacock.
