Elizabeth Banks stars in the new thriller “Skincare,” playing a Hollywood based aesthetician who sees her career crumble after a rival facialist (Luis Gerardo Méndez) moves across from her business. The feature, directed by Austin Peters, co-stars Lewis Pullman as a friend of Hope who promises to help her seemingly sticky situation. “Skincare,” which opened in theaters August 16, does feature a locked in performance as aesthetician Hope Goldman and co-stars Lewis Pullman also is a standout as her all too interested friend Jordan. Though director Austin Peters knows how to shoot a visually interesting feature, “Skincare” simply did not come together. There are fragments of brilliance here and there, but certain scenes were repetitive and slowed down the terrific momentum supplied by the story’s opening moments. It was a total misfire for me, but the good news is that CinemAddicts co-hosts Eric Holmes and Bruce Purkey both recommend the feature.

Eric Holmes gave “Skincare” our highest rating with ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Bruce Purkey also gave the proverbial thumps up with a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating. I gave “Skincare” ⭐️⭐️½, which is a total surprise since I am usually in the bag with thrillers.
