I really loved director/writer James Gunn’s (Guardians of the Galaxy) take on the vigilante superhero universe with Super, and now he’s bringing his family into the mix with Brightburn. While Super was an inspired (and heartbreaking) riff on Batman, Brightburn takes on the Superman myth head on, and the trailer is absolutely fantastic.

The official summary teaser of Brightburn is “what if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?”
Jackson A. Dunn plays Brandon Breyer, a high school outcast with no friend in sight. Brandon may have loving parents (David Denman, Elizabeth Banks), but he’s still a tortured soul. Since he has been gifted with powers, why not use them? Instead of going the Clark Kent route, Brandon wreaks havoc on his town, and even his loving and over protective mother can’t stop him!
The feature is directed by David Yarovesky (The Hive) and produced by James Gunn. Brian Gunn, James’ brother, and cousin Mark Gunn penned the screenplay. Brian and Mark previously were the screenwriters behind Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, so these guys know a thing or two about crafting an immersive experience.
I absolutely loved the trailer (Jackson A. Dunn looks like he knocked this role out of the park). Check it out below and tell me what you think!!
Brightburn opens nationwide May 24.
****I had the pleasure of interviewing Denman for the underrated flick Puzzle. Here is his take on Apocalypse Now (Kelly Macdonald also featured discusses The Apartment):
