One of the wonderful aspects of working on Chicago Fire for actors Jesse Spencer (“Matthew Casey”) and Monica Raymund (“Gabriela Dawson”) must be the positive reaction the show has received over its successful run. Spencer, however, had a different prediction on how the show was going to be perceived.

“I thought the fire community was going to hate it . . . but they love it,” says Spencer. “They’ve really come out and supported us and they love the show. That’s what we wanted – you never expect it, but you do hope for it.”
For Raymund, playing “Gabriela Dawson” holds a different resonance, especially with the passing of “Leslie Shay” (Lauren German) at the hands of an arsonist (Prison Break alum Robert Knepper):
“Personally as a woman on the show and now as the only female firefighter on TV – it’s very important to me that I can hear feedback. Especially from female responders. They appreciate so much that their stories are being told and it’s an honor to be able to do that.” – Monica Raymund
The video version of their answers, as well as Spencer talking about the impressive skill set of a particular female firefighter (he also mentions Chicago Fire tech advisor Steve “Chick” Chikerotis in the clip), is below:
Chicago Fire airs tonight on NBC (10/9c).
