Acclaimed filmmaker Oliver Hermanus (Living, Moffie) collaborated with actors Paul Mescal, Josh O’Connor and Chris Cooper for his next feature The History of Sound. In a statement, Hermanus said the film delves into what “if one’s first love, one’s great love, and one’s last love are all in one, and all too soon in one’s life?” Color me intrigued!

The History of Sound centers on Lionel (Paul Mescal), a music student who bonds with David (Josh O’Connor) over folk music. The two would ultimately journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs, and it is this time which ultimately shapes Lionel’s road ahead.

Ben Shattuck based his screenplay on his own story. The trailer shows a bit of Chris Cooper’s voiceover (as the elder Lionel) and Mescal singing (he’s pretty good!). The Rotten Tomatoes critics score is at 65%. The reactions are pretty divisive.
