The new release The Dreadful marked the reunion of Game of Thrones stars Sophie Turner and Kit Harington. The movie also boasts a standout performance from Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden as a woman determined to keep her daughter-in-law (Turner) under her thumb. CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes and I talked about the ending of The Dreadful and had a spoilers discussion of the feature. Check out the video below!

Directed and written by Natasha Kermani, The Dreadful is a Gothic tale set in medieval England. Anne (Sophie Turner) and her over protective mother-in-law Morwen (Marcia Gay Harden) are struggling to survive on a day to day basis. When Anne’s childhood friend Jago (Kit Harington) returns home with tragic news about her husband’s fate, Anne and Morwen are understandably distraught.

Not helping matters is a mysterious knight who pops in and out of Anne’s life. Running at 94 minutes and rated R, The Dreadful currently rests at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes. I gave the movie ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and co-host Eric Holmes threw down ⭐️⭐️⭐️, so both of us recommend the feature. The Dreadful hit theaters on February 20, and it’s also available On Digital and On Demand.
Who Was The Mysterious Knight?
The big reveal in The Dreadful was the identity of the mysterious knight. It ended up being Anne’s supposedly late husband, who actually was cursed wearing the knight’s outfit when he killed the previous wearer in a battle. Morwen inherited the knight’s helmet after she accidentally murdered her son (thinking the knight was someone else).
My read on the knight’s armor is that it’s temporarily owned by people with greed and bloodlust in their hearts. Ultimately Anne strips Morwen out of the knight’s helmet, leaving her mother-in-law permanently injured and disfigured in the process. After that incident, Anne is now the primary caretaker of Morwen, and she also decided to break things off with Jago.
Even though Anne is now a more independent woman, she is not free from being cursed herself with greed and evil actions in the future, especially since she decided to keep the helmet in a secret hiding place. Check out our full ending explained/spoilers discussion of The Dreadful:
