Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi tale headlined by Ryan Gosling, hits theateres nationwide March 20. CinemAddicts host Eric Holmes drove over to his nearest Alamo Drafthouse (in Littleton) once he heard early showings were in the offing and he wasn’t disappointed. A huge fan of Andy Weir’s beloved 2021 novel, Holmes got co-host Bruce Purkey to read the novel and Purkey was also enthralled. As far as the movie goes, Holmes had a ton of great things to say, and it currently stands as one of his favorite films of 2026. Did he have a few nitpicks? Check out his full review below!

Eric Holmes’ review is a lengthy one, as he recounts meeting several strangers at the Alamo Drafthouse and making new friends in the process. Since the movie is hugely about the important friendship between Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) and the alien Rocky (a puppet operated by James Ortiz), it was a very synchronistic evening at the movies for Holmes.

“The movie is equal parts harrowing and funny,” said Holmes. “It’ll get you teared up and get you crying sometimes. (There will be) a couple of sad cries, but also a couple of happy cries. The ending (of the movie) is tweaked slightly (from the book). But I think (fans of the book) will like the certain tweak that is made. There were some thijngs that I wouldv’e liked to have seen from the book that weren’t there, but the book exists. I can read it again and I want to watch the movie a hundred more times.”
