“The union is quite perfect with John,” said Lucas West, who chose John Legend as his coach during the Blinds. “He’s everything I strive to be as a musician. (He’s) a very accomplished pianist (and) a very accomplished singer.”
And the musicianship is off the charts, so I’m very happy to be here on Team Legend. Very, very happy.”
One of the more enlightening aspects of The Voice: Battle of Champions came from West’s interactions with the coaches, most notably his work with Legend.
”It’s really incredible and that’s kind of the magic of the blind audition is you have the coaches and they’re in these magnificent Red Thrones,” said West. It’s like, ‘wow, look at, look at these guys.’ Then once you hit the rehearsal room, which we’ll see with, with my coach John in this case, you really just see that they’re musicians that are just really far down the path and have accomplished a lot in their lives.
“Now they have the opportunity to give back and say yes to artists like me who are younger and aspiring to do the kinds of things they’re doing,” added West. “So I think that was my biggest surprise for the experience was just how, humanizing it was from contestant to coach.”
