Joel Edgerton Would Love To Meet ‘Black Mass’ Character

Warner Bros. Pictures
Warner Bros. Pictures

Opening Friday, Black Mass centers on Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp), an Irish mobster who collaborated with the FBI (John Connollyplayed by Joel Edgerton, was his handler) to bring justice to the Italian mob.

The alliance initially worked in Bulger’s favor, as his own criminal empire flourished. Eventually Bulger’s activities would land him on the FBI’s ten most wanted fugitives list.

During the Black Mass press conference, Joel Edgerton didn’t meet with Connolly (who’s currently in jail on a murder conviction) while preparing for the role. Still, the actor wouldn’t mind a sit down with Connolly. “I would love to spend time with him and I’m sort of terrified of him watching the movie and going, ‘Oh you got that guy to be me?'” says Edgerton.

Black Mass, directed by Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Crazy Heart), also stars Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Rory Cochrane (A Scanner Darkly), and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes).
