Opening Friday, Black Mass centers on Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp), an Irish mobster who collaborated with the FBI (John Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton, was his handler) to bring justice to the Italian mob.

The alliance initially worked in Bulger’s favor, as his own criminal empire flourished. Eventually Bulger’s activities would land him on the FBI’s ten most wanted fugitives list.
During the Black Mass press conference, Joel Edgerton didn’t meet with Connolly (who’s currently in jail on a murder conviction) while preparing for the role. Still, the actor wouldn’t mind a sit down with Connolly. “I would love to spend time with him and I’m sort of terrified of him watching the movie and going, ‘Oh you got that guy to be me?'” says Edgerton.
