Director/writer George Nolfi and actor Anthony Mackie have worked together on “The Adjustment Bureau” and “The Banker.” Their successful collaboration continues with the first rate action thriller “Elevation.” Nolfi talked to Deepest Dream about the visual design behind his ambitious feature and elaborated on why he loves working with Mackie.
A post-apocalyptic tale set in the Rocky Mountains, “Elevation” centers on a single dad named Will (Anthony Mackie) who needs to get medical supplies for his son (Danny Boyd Jr.). Unfortunately, the local hospital is below 8,000 feet, and unless humans are in an elevated area, they will be hunted down by seemingly indestructible creatures. Accompanying Will on this perilous journey is his close friend Katie (Maddie Hasson) and an unfriendly scientist (Morena Baccarin).
During the interview, I asked George Nolfi about the visual design behind “Elevation.” The movie is divided into several distinct chapters, and each of these sections were intricately detailed. Nolfi also talked about what drew him to the screenplay and why he loves collaborating with Mackie.
“You want to work with somebody who you have a shorthand with and a friendship,” said Nolfi who added that he plans to do more films with the actor. “Because, the s**t hits the fan regularly on on a movie set, you’re trying to do something. (When) the line producer comes to you and says we don’t have the piece of equipment we need or it’s going to rain in an hour. And you have to adapt and you have to be able to sit down with a cool head and say, ‘Well, what if we did it this way?’ That’s really, really important working with Mackie. And he brings you in, you care about him.”
