Based on Mary Mapes’ memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power, Truth centers on Mapes’ (Cate Blanchett) investigation of evidence that President George W. Bush may have not fulfilled his Texas Air National Guard duties by allegedly not showing up on base.

What begin as a headline making 60 Minutes piece turned into “Rathergate,” as the careers of both Mapes and Dan Rather (Robert Redford) were severely affected by the repercussions surrounding the investigative report.

Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, Top of the Lake) sat down for interviews today with Truth writer/director James Vanderbilt to talk about the film, and during our roundtable with the pair I asked Moss if there is a specific type of filmmaker she loves to work with.

“There’s no right way to direct- there’s so many different ways to do it and actors are so different,” said Moss, who plays journalism professor Lucy Scott, one of Mapes’ highly efficient researchers,  in the film. “So even if there is a ‘right’ way to direct, actors are going to want different things. So there isn’t any one way to do it.”

In the audio clip below, Elisabeth Moss talks about the advantages of working with a writer/director such as Vanderbilt:

Truth, co-starring Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace, opens October 16 in New York and Los Angeles.
