David Mackenzie directs the action thriller Fuze, a London set action thriller about a World War II bomb that has been discovered at a construction site. Military veteran Will (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is the head of a focused crew tasked with the bomb defusal mission. With the city evacuated for safety, a criminal outfit (which includes Sam Worthington and Theo James) embark on an ambitious bank heist. Mackenzie, who talks about taking risks within the Fuze narrative (it’s writtey by Ben Hopkins), explains why he brings a healthy share of creative ambition to his work.

Throughout his career, David Mackenzie has hopped from genre to genre and he brings a singular trademark to his work. Don’t expect a cut and dry approach to his narrative, and Fuze snugly fits into that aesthetic. “It is a cliche, but, I’ve done 12 films and they never get any easier,” said Mackenzie, whose films include Relay and Hell or High Water. “I put my heart and soul into these things every time I do them. And I really like to work with the actors. I’m not a remote director. I’m right in there and amongst it and I’m trying to kind of create a world which is authentic and alive as possible.”

Even with all his success, Mackenzie simply won’t rest on his laurels. “I get anxious when I haven’t done (a movie) for a while,” said Mackenzie, who also received acclaim for the prison drama Starred Up and the epic Outlaw King (which also features Aaron-Taylor Johnson). “I’m at that stage now – it’s been a while since I’ve finished Fuze. So I gotta get my next job!”

Fuze, written by Inside screenwriter Ben Hopkins and co-starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw , is now playing in theaters. Share your thoughts on the movie in the comments!
