Chloe Van Landschoot Talks ‘Son of Sara,’ Nursing, And Exploring “Spectrum of Humanity”

Chloe Van Landschoot, best known for her work on the TV series From, headlines the indie horror Son of Sara. Now on digital, the film centers on Sara (Van Landschoot), a pregnant woman whose fateful encounter with ex-boyfriend Troy (Garrett Hnatiuk) leads to a nightmarish and bloody ordeal. Co-starring Tymika Tafari as Sara’s understandably concerned lover and Jane Moffat as Troy’s unhinged mother, Son of Sara is a tension riddled tale that I really dug. Van Landschoot talked to Deepest Dream about her acting and also discussed how her years as a nurse informed her artistry and humanity.

Preparing For ‘Son of Sara’ Role

Directed and written by Houston Bone, Son of Sara had a brisk shooting schedule. “We shot Son of Sara, I think, in 13 days, but Houston was very adamant about making sure that all the actors had really good chemistry,” said Chloe Van Landschoot. “And we did. We’d hang out a lot before we went to camera, so everyone just felt very comfortable with each other.”

One big drama for Son of Sara is the level of physicality that the role entailed. “Yeah, I really enjoyed that,” said Van Landschoot. “I have a big movement background, so being able to tell a story with my whole body was exciting for me. The challenge was just ensuring I had enough prep time to figure out where pregnancy sat in me.”

“I’ve never been pregnant before,” added Van Landschoot. “I’ve seen a lot of really bad pregnant acting on TV and Film, and I didn’t want to do that. I got the pregnant belly early and walked around town with it for a week or so. Just to figure out little things like how to get up from a chair, or how to get up from lying down or how to throw up with a belly on.”

Nursing And The “Spectrum of Humanity”

Although shooting From and projects Son of Sara keeps Van Landschoot busy, she still finds the time to keep her nurse license. “I work the one shift every six months I need to keep my license,” said Van Landschoot. “I worked hard for that and it’s an important part of who I am, and I don’t ever want to let that go.”

Can nursing and acting live in the same room? “I never saw them as separate worlds,” said Van Landschoot. “I saw them as these two things that feed each other and totally inform one another. A lot of my storytelling and artististic impulse stems from my life as a nurse. Working in healthcare, observing people being really vulnerable. Seeing the spectrum of humanity in a shift. So yeah, they’re never separate.”
