Mosquito State, directed by Filip Jan Rymsza, is a supremely odd movie. From the opening credits, which alternate between microscopic images and illustrations of the life-cycle of a mosquito, we know that this movie will be something unusual.

Although thrillers are a dime a dozen, I unapologetically eat up most of these movies sans compunction. Lucky, directed by Natasha Kermani and starring Brea Grant, is a standout in this genre space. Feature is now out on DVD (along with Digital HD and VOD). This DVD is worth a purchase just for its commentary track (with Kermani and Grant) . . .
Director Jack C. Newell’s (42 Grams, Hope Springs Eternal) latest feature Monuments centers on a widower (David Sullivan) who searches for the perfect resting place for his wife’s (Marguerite Moreau) ashes. An engaging comedy with a resonant storyline, Monuments is an indie gem that I hope gets more attention. Newell talked to Deepest Dream about how his own family life inspired the film’s genesis.
Another week of movie watching is complete, and over at Find Your Film we highly recommend Leos Carax’s latest feature Annette as well as the Prime Video documentary Val. Naked Singularity and John and the Hole are also covered!
Although I had only a few minutes with Mercedes and Jack Kilmer for the documentary Val, they delivered some value added insight on their father and his work. During the brief chat they talked about their favorite Val Kilmer films, what they want viewers to take away from the experience, and why director The Island of Dr. Moreau director John Frankenheimer is a “phony.”
Night of the Animated Dead, an animated recreation of George A. Romero’sNight of the Living Dead, hits Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on October 5. The feature arrives on Digital September 21.
Filmmaker Xavier Gens (Cold Skin, The Divide) is one of the several directors (Corin Hardy, Gareth Evans) behind Gangs of London. The first season has just been released on Blu-ray and DVD via RLJE Films. In the interview, Gens discussed working with Gangs of London actors Michelle Fairley and Sope Dirisu.
