Filmmaker Barry Jay and actor Dylan Flashner talked to Deepest Dream about “Like Father Like Son,” an engaging thriller about a man questions whether he has his father’s (Dermot Mulroney) killer instinct. It is a singular narrative from Jay that is bolstered by a locked in performance from Flashner. If you are expecting a by the numbers, empty calories thriller, you’ve come to the wrong place. Jay and Flashner talked about making the feature, which hits theaters, Digital and On Demand January 31.
CinemAddicts co-host Bruce Purkey is our resident anime enthusiast, and this week he has nothing but praise for director Naoko Yamada’s “The Colors Within.” The GKIDS feature hits theaters on January 24. Check out Bruce’s review below!
"Inheritance" Photos and Poster - Angelo Dominic Sesto / IFC Films
Directed and co-written by Neil Burger (“Divergent,” “Limitless”), “Inheritance” centers on Maya (Phoebe Dynevor), a woman who is understandably reeling after her mother’s death. Her estranged dad Sam (Rhys Ifans) reenters her life with a lucrative business proposal. When he is kidnapped, Maya must retrieve a priceless item or else her father is killed. CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes and I both recommend “Inheritance” – check out our review below!
Autumn and the Black Jaguar - Mai Juin Productions / Wishing Tree Productions
CinemAddicts co-host Bruce Purkey was not a fan of the new family feature “Autumn and the Black Jaguar.” I had a more positive response to the film, and you can hear my take on our latest CinemAddicts episode. Check out Purkey’s video review in this post, and our respective reviews of the film are also featured in the audio version.
One movie we disagreed on this week, in varying degrees, is the new romantic drama “Wish You Were Here.” CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes and I recommend the feature, which marks the feature directing debut of actress Julia Stiles. Bruce Purkey gave an unfavorable review, and all of our “Wish You Were Here” takes are features on the latest CinemAddicts episode. Check out our coverage below!
This week on CinemAddicts, our unanimous movie pick of the week is “Night Call,” a Belgian action thriller that doesn’t pull its punches. CinemAddicts co-host Bruce Purkey’s video review of the feature is below, and you can hear all of our “Night Call” takes on the audio podcast as well!
Odessa Young (“Mothering Sunday”) is not the only shining star in the memorable horror feature “The Damned.” Visually, the film is an immersive cinematic experience. If you are looking for a compelling psychological tale, you have also come to the right place. A chamber drama that features eye-catching compositions is few and far between, making “The Damned” a welcome experience.
“Wish You Were Here” is the feature directing debut of actress Julia Stiles. She co-wrote the movie with Renée Carlino (based on her novel). Plus, the movie stars Stiles’ “Orphan: First Kill” co-star Isabelle Fuhrman! Sign me up!!
Based on the Pulitizer Prize winning novel “The Nickel Boys,” “Nickel Boys” centers on the friendship of Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson). The teens are part of Nickel Academy, a racist, nightmarish reformatory in the South. Daveed Diggs, who plays the adult Elwood, talked to Deepest Dream about what makes “Nickel Boys” a unique cinematic experience.
Now playing in theaters, “The Man in the White Van” centers on Annie (Madison Wolfe), a spirited girl who is being stalked by a threatening individual. The movie, rated PG-13 and running 105 minutes, is based on a true story. Director Warren Skeels talked about the “guiding light” behind his feature which he co-wrote with Sharon Y. Cobb.
