The Banished exists as a horror-thriller narrative that will not be for every cinephile. If you are looking for an abstract and meticulously crafted tale, however, this Australian puzzle box is a worthy watch. Although CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes and have vastly different opinions, we did spend a healthy chunk of time reviewing The Banished.

“You’re gonna love it or hate,” says director/writer Matthew Freheit. Shot in Los Angeles, “Iconic” centers on Rose (Emma Jade), a beauty influencer whose perception of reality may be on its last legs. Alyssa Anthony is Lilly, Rose’s new girlfriend who is understandably concerned over Rose’s well-being. Shot with a ton of visual style and editing panache, “Iconic,” as Freheit attests, is divisive. If you are looking for a six episode limited series that is easily bingeable, “Untamed” might be your type of show. Eric Bana stars as a National Park Service agent who investigates a young woman’s death in Yosemite. Initially believed to be an accident, this was ultimately no regular fall off the cliff. Directed and co-written by Mitzi Peirone, “Saint Clare” centers on a solitary woman (Bella Thorne) who kills evil people. Her latest victim leads her down an even darker path. It’s definitely an intriguing premise, and CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes recommends the movie. Directed and co-written by Mark O’Connor, “Amongst The Wolves” is a gripping, Dublin set crime thriller that is now out in U.S. theaters and available on VOD. Obviously this is the weekend of “Superman,” but hopefully this movie won’t go too far under the radar. Ti-Kong (Thevada Dek), a Kung-fu master with a four foot long penis, is found murdered and Francis (Franc Bruneau) falls into the cluthes of the manipulative Doctor Sweeper (Xavier Lacaille). Francis’ girlfriend Sonia (Vanessa Guide) is determined to make sure the Sweeper’s plans for world domination fails. Plus, she needs to rescue her boyfriend!Â
Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo (“Colossal,” “Timecrimes”), “Daniela Forever” is a Madrid set love story with a sci-fi twist. Henry Golding (“The Old Guard 2”) is Nicolás, a DJ who falls in love with Daniela (Beatrice Grannò from “The White Lotus”), a digital artist from Italy. Daniela dies in a car accident, but thanks to a revolutionary sleep trial Nicolás reunites with his lover.
Inspired by true events, “Sovereign” centers on Jerry and Joseph Kane (Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay), a father and son who hold an anti-establishment philosphy. Their worldview places them into an inevitable confrontation with Police Chief Jim Bouchart (Dennis Quaid). Written and directed by Christian Swegal, “Sovereign” is one of this week’s top picks from CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes.
