Alicia Keys Brings ‘Powerful’ Arc To ‘Empire’ Universe

The fall finale of Empire’s second season airs tomorrow, and though the main storyline deals with the repercussions of a huge  and possibly disastrous business decision of Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard), there’s also a ton of artistry amidst all the high powered dealings thanks to Alicia Keys’ guest starring role of Skye Summers.

Summers is a pop star who’s trying to break out of her creative shell and expand her music horizons, and Jamal (Jussie Smollett) may be the perfect collaborator, as witnessed by last week’s performance of the rousing single “Powerful.”

“It’s really beautiful because it’s like this very complex, interesting relationship,” said Keys. “And you see, like in life, things are never just one way or the other way. They’re always very . . . there’s a lot of layers. So you see all those layers in this story.”

In the audio clip below, Alicia Keys goes all in and breaks down Skye Summer’s inspiring and complicated journey through the Empire universe:

And here’s Keys talking about the “family” vibe behind Empire and working with Terrance Howard and Jussie Smollett:

Catch the fall finale of Empire Wednesday, December 2 on FOX (9/8c).
