The premise of The Inhabitant has a teenager named Tara (Odessa A’zion) believing she is a killer thanks to being a descendant of Lizzie Borden. Filmmaker Jerren Lauder talked to Deepest Dream about his editing and visual aesthetic behind The Inhabitant and what made A’zion and co-star Lizze Broadway stand out as actresses.
Penned by Kevin Bachar, The Inhabitant also stars Leslie Bibb and Dermot Mulroney as Tara’s (Odessa A’zion) understandably concerned parents. Broadway is Tara’s best friend Suzy. The narrative, along with containing its share of chilling moments, misdirects the audience all the way until the explosive third act.
“Everyone in this movie has a duality going on,” said director Jerren Lauder. “So we wanted to split their face with light as much as possible. Because of what is happening to Tara, the editing gets more and more fractured and fragmented. That helps us create an atmosphere where you don’t know when a jump scare is going to happen next.”
The aforementioned jump scares do not stick out like a sore thumb in The Inhabitant, and I appreciated Lauder’s decision to craft a visually interesting story as well. Full interview with Jerren Lauder is below!!
