“The Penny Black” is described as a “non-fiction investigative thriller” about Will Cassayd-Smith, a Los Angeles resident who agrees to hold onto a million dollar stamp collection that is owned by his mysterious neighbor Roman. Several years later, Will is still trying to find Roman, and the documentary also explores the veracity behind the stamp story.
I doubt if “The Penny Black” is actually a documentary, and that is a sentiment shared by co-host Bruce Purkey. That said, this feature is worth a look since the story is pretty outrageous. Director Joe Saunders delivers a no-frills approach to the proceedings. By the end of the feature don’t be surprised if you’re still thinking about who is conning who in this ultimately immersive narrative.
