One Blu-ray I’m looking forward to reviewing is “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” an underrated Western that was written and directed by Viggo Mortensen. “The Power of the Dog” filmmaker Jane Campion makes a special appearance on the extras. Check out this post for details!
“The Dead Don’t Hurt” centers on Vivienne LeCoudy (Vicky Krieps), a strong-willed independent woman who falls in love with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Viggo Mortensen). Their life begins in Elk Flats, Nevada in a remote home in the wilderness. The tale is set in the 1860s, and when The Civil War begins Holger joins up as a Union soldier.
Holger’s absence leads Vivienne to take care of their home. Due to a corrupt mayor (Danny Huston), a power hungry rancher (Garret Dillahunt) and the rancher’s violen son (Solly McLeod), Vivienne finds herself at odds with the evil that has spread throughout the area.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! This was an introspective and ultimately resonant drama which features a stunning performance from Krieps, and the third act pretty much floored me. Special features on the Blu-ray include a making-of featurette, “The Dead Don’t Hurt: A Conversation Between Jane Campion and Viggo Mortensen,” and Deleted Scenes.
I’m looking forward to what scenes Mortensen left out of the narrative. The movie stands alone as an excellent Western, but it will be great to see if any of the cut scenes adds texture to the tale.
“The Dead Don’t Hurt” hits Blu-ray December 6 via Shout! Studios.
