One of the many strong aspects of Suzi Q lies in its honest look at Suzi Quatro’s life, and Quatro is not one to sugar coat the bumps she had along the journey. Australian filmmaker Liam Firmager did not direct a documentary that was simply aimed at Quatro’s diehard fans. Rather, Suzi Q is an engrossing look at an artist who refused to be boxed in by popular trends or opinions. It’s an inspiring and universal story that thankfully doesn’t lose its edge (of course, a huge credit goes to the subject’s trademark energy and candor).
During our interview Suzi Quatro talked about the overwhelmingly positive reaction she has received from the documentary:
It’s been like a rediscovery, you know? It’s been amazing. I have had across the board Radio, TV, Newspaper – just praise. Non-stop praise for this documentary. It’s quite unprecedented and I can only say I’m glad I stuck to my guns and made it real (so did Liam Firmager). We were on the same page that way.
(It’s) humbling to see people say stuff like that about you – I never expected that. I’m being rediscovered; it’s great.
Cherie (Currie) who is a friend of mine now, she gave me an award at the SheRocks ceremony in January and I asked her to do it for me (the Icon Award). She went to give up her speech and she started to cry and I kind of went ‘Wow, I didn’t expect this.’Â
And when I did an interview on the phone with the two of them for tomorrow night’s premiere, Kathy Valentine and Cherie, and Kathy gave me an award in Texas a few years before that (the Woman of Valor Award).
And we’re talking the three of us on Zoom and Kathy starts to cry. I’m listening to the people on the video and now I realize what this documentary has shown me which I didn’t know.
Without meaning to and I say it honestly without meaning to . . . I gave all these women who had no place where they belonged, someplace where they could live.
