Operation Taco Gary’s, directed and written by Mikey K, is a hilarious (and at the end, surprisingly evocative) comedy that CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes described as “oddball” humor. Even though Mikey K said that comedy is “super subjective,” he was heartened by the initial response to his film. Check out his full interview below for more insights to his standout directing feature debut.

Danny (Simon Rex) is a conspiracy theorist who takes his younger brother Luke (Dustin Milligan) in a madcap adventure that puts both of their lives in danger. Luke is not appreciative of Danny’s actions, but as the two get deeper into the one true conspiracy, maybe there is a little bit of rhyme to Danny’s madness. The ensemble comedy co-stars Brenda Song, Doug Jones (as an alien!), and Jason Biggs (playing himself).

“It’s a comedy so it’s super subjective,” said Mikey K. “Either you like it or don’t. So there’s not a ton of nuance to these kind of things. I wanted to try to make as many people laugh as possible. When I have gone to different audience screenings, the reaction has been pretty dang good. Hopefully the jokes will come across (on streaming) but with every movie, you want people to see it in the theater because it’s that shared experience of people laughing together. That’s why I wrote it.”

One of the adversities of this indie project was the production did not have weather insurance. “There was no room for pick ups,” said Mikey K. “If it rained for two days, we wouldn’t be here now. We were just praying that we we would luck out on weather. If there was lightning within 100 miles, we had to close down the set completely. The challenge was that there was zero wiggle room. We didn’t have the budget to make mistakes or have any bad days. Ninety five percent of what we shot was in the movie. We just filmed the script because that’s all we had time for.”
