“This is the first time for me to do a lot of judo in an action movie,” said Joe Taslim, who was recently seen in Mortal Kombat II. Director Kenji Tanigaki wanted to introduce to the action world that judo can be beautiful. (And) it can be effective because not many action movies dare enough to use judo as a main foundation of how the character fights. That for me (was) something special because I’m a judoka. After this movie, people are probably going to get interested in learning judo and that’s something we can contributo to the action and martial arts world at the same time.”

Taslim likens martial artst to music. Whether a person plays guitar or piano, there is sheet music that exists as a foundation. “So martial arts is the same thing, because I’m a judoka doesn’t mean I know the essense of (all) martial arts,” said Taslim. “I know it’s all about control and being able to understand yourself and what part of the muscle you’re good (at) and what you’re not good at. So when you jump to another martial arts (form), you’re not trying to change yourself, but you’re improving yourself with what you have.”
