Filmmaking brothers Ian and Eshom Nelms have proven with Fatman and Small Town Crime that nuanced storytelling is part of their aesthetic. Though Jonathan Easley is the writer of their latest feature Red Right Hand, the Nelms’ ability to capture specific environments and craft well etched characters continues. The pair talked to Deepest Dream about Red Right Hand and casting Orlando Bloom and Andie MacDowell for the project.

Cash is trying his best to keep his family together, but a deadly crime boss named Big Cat (Andie MacDowell) wants him back on her crew. She sends her men to threaten Cash’s brother-in-law (Scott Haze) and niece (Chapel Oaks), and ultimately push comes to shove. The ensemble includes Garret Dillahunt as the tough nosed town preacher and Brian Geraghty as the do-nothing Sheriff.

After directing Small Town Crime, Ian and Eshom Nelms had a “two hour breakfast” with Orlando Bloom. “We liked the guy that we met and we wanted to make something with him, and he wanted to make somnething with us,” said Eshom Nelms. “And we’re like, ‘Man, let’s find something to do together.”

“(Orlando) seemed to have a real appetite for doing things that he hadn’t done before (and was) really trying to go into some genres that we’d never seen him in before,” said Ian Nelms. “We were really excited by that.”
