Freaks is a sci-fi thriller that doesn’t depend on a $100 million budget to deliver the goods. Directed and penned by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, the indie managed to attract an A-list cast, and the pair talked about the key to unlocking that important element in the video below!
Freaks centers on Chloe (Lexy Kolker), a 7-year-old who remains locked in her house due to a paranoid father (Emile Hirsch) who claims the world outside is a very dangerous place. Chloe’s ventures into an unknown environment leads to a meeting with an enigmatic ice cream truck driver named Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern, delivering another solid performance).
Ultimately Chloe’s search for the truth leads to a discovery that is bound to change not only her own family dynamic, but the world around her. Amanda Crew and Grace Park round out the ensemble.
The narrative is an ambitious one, and actually the picture could have existed as a large budgeted, tentpole film. Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein didn’t have millions to work with, and they actually planned on shooting the film on a shoestring budget (Adam’s son was to play the child, and the directors would star as the two leads!).
As luck and ingenuity would have it, a solid group of actors were attracted to Freaks, and this low budget affair turned into a film that, in my opinion, is definitely worth a look. Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein talk about how they attracted a stellar group of actors in the video below. Basically, if you’re a filmmaker with no budget to speak of, focus on writing a kick a** screenplay!!
Freaks hits theaters September 13.
