Noirvember is upon us, and The Criterion Channel is celebrating this month with a spotlight on the 100th anniversary of Columbia Pictures. Filmmakers Samuel Fuller (“The Crimson Kimono”), Charles Vidor (“Gilda”), and Fritz Lang (“The Big Heat”) were among the luminaries who worked on the lot to craft modestly budgeted and classic film noirs. Check out the Columbia noirs availabe to stream on The Criterion Channel!

Although Samuel Fuller is one of my favorite filmmakers (thanks to “The Big Red One” and “Shock Corridor”), “The Crimson Kimono” is one of the Fuller flicks I need to see. From the Columbia Noir list, I highly recommend the underrated features “Nightfall” and “Murder by Contract.” CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes is a fan of “Experiement in Terror,” so I’ll definitely have to check that one out.

Below is the list of all the movies featured on The Criterion Channel’s Columbia Noir spotlight:

  1. “The Face Behind The Mask” (1941, Robert Florey)
  2. “Ladies in Retirement” (1941, Charles Vidor)
  3. “Gilda” (1946, Charles Vidor)
  4. “The Killer That Stalked New York” (1950, Earl McEvoy)
  5. “The Sniper” (1952, Edward Dmytryk)
  6. “Strange Fascination” (1952, Hugo Haas)
  7. “The Big Heat” (1953, Fritz Lang)
  8. “Human Desire” (1954, Fritz Lang)
  9. “Pickup Alley” (1957, John Gilling)
  10. “Nightfall” (1957, Jacques Tourneur)
  11. “Murder by Contract” (1958, Irving Lerner)
  12. “The Crimson Kimono” (1959, Samuel Fuller)
  13. “Experiment in Terror” (1962, Blake Edwards)
