CinemAddicts Review: ‘The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane’ (Documentary)

On this week’s CinemAddicts, Bruce Purkey and I reccommend The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane, a documentary that centers on the murder of 21-year-old British backpacker Grace Millane. Now out in theaters and available On Demand, The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane is directed with tact and precision by Helena Coan.

The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane focuses on how Millane met Jesse Kempson inside a New Zealand bar. CCTV footage helped piece together Kempson’s activities after Millane’s death, and the documentary also covers Kempson’s criminal trial. A healthy portion of the documentary also shows footage of Kempson’s interrogation, and it’s frustrating to watch how even keeled he seemed to be throughout the entire ordeal.

Filmmaker Helana Coan directs the documentary sans without any type of tabloid journalism, and Millane’s tragic story is told in a refreshingly even handed fashion.
