Our Brand Is Crisis was one of last year’s more overlooked films, and hopefully the film a bit more attention now that it’s out on Blu-ray and DVD.
When Bolivian presidential candidate (Joaquin de Almeida) is slipping in the polls, semi-retired strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine (Sandra Bullock) is hired to save the day. Though Jane is well respected in her profession, her campaigns often fail whenever she battles her rival Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton), who is now representing the opposition.
With a determined team (Zoe Kazan, Scoot McNairy, Anthony Mackie, Ann Dowd) as support, Jane is determined to finally beat Pat at his own game and conquer her own demons. In the film’s most memorable performance, Reynaldo Pacheco plays an idealistic intern who joins Jane’s team, believing his country could change once the right person is elected.
Directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Manglehorn), Our Brand Is Crisis is lifted by dynamite chemistry between Bullock and Thornton, as their sarcastic exchanges serve as the comedic highlights of the picture. Jane Bodine is also one of Bullock’s most intriguing characters, as her journey from an ambitious strategist to a concerned citizen of the world makes for compelling viewing.
Although a director’s commentary from David Gordon Green would have been more than welcome, the Blu-ray comes with the 11-minute featurette “Sandra Bullock: A Role Like No Other.” The segment, which contains interviews from the cast and crew, delves into Bullock’s creative journey with the film.
During the press conference for Our Brand Is Crisis, Sandra Bullock explained why she wishes strategists like Pat and Jane were not such a huge part of the political process:
